If you're a versatile player and have the necessary ability, Pep will love you. My guess is he would ideally like a team of 11 versatile players, including a 'keeper with the ability to dribble the full length of the field and score.

Being versatile can have done Foden no harm at all.

It is now clear that this is the player who will be the replacement for KDB.
The flexibility he now is able to offer is because of his developed understanding of the game, and his natural ability. His ceiling is immense.

When KDB and Haaland were injured Pep was forced to play Foden more centrally and everyone got to see just how brilliant he is there. This gives Pep a bit of a headache because he clearly rates Alvarez and wants him in the team, so Foden gets shoved out wide. Problem is this puts huge pressure on Alvarez to perform and many more performances from him like yesterday and he's going to come under pressure. This is tough on the lad because he's just not a ten, doesn't have anywhere near Foden's attributes to play there. Probably some truth in the assertion that Foden is more accepting of being moved around because he loves the club and came through the academy. In short, I agree with the op.

Under Pep:
Gvardiol, a top CB, is playing LB.
Ake, a CB is playing LB.
Akanji, a CB often plays RB
Stones, a CB, plays in midfield.
Rico, a RB in midfield
Yaya a DM, played in a more attacking midfield role.
Gundogan a DM played AM/10.
Kompany a DM played CB
Zinchenko a DM played LB
Delph a DM played LB
Cancelo a RB played LB
Aguero a 9 someteimes played a 10
Jesus a 9 played a 10 and on the wings.
Bernardo, anywhere wnd everywhere.
Dinho, anywhere and everyehere.
Kevin, across multiple front positions.
Sterling a winger, played as a striker.
Alvarez a striker played as a 10.
Etc etc.

And Foden is treated differently because he is from the academy?
Pretty much agree with this Pep uses players according to how their abilities will serve a particular team plan rather than according to nominal positions. Virtually all our players play different roles at different times. Of our current outfield players , its only really Haaland and possibly Rodri and Grealish who are barely asked to alter their positioning /role.
Even Rodri I think may have used as a centre back certainly during a game.and Grealish is getting a bit more grief recently.

Some grumpy fuckers on this forum. The lad plays every week and is still young. What more do u want
