47 | Phil Foden - 2023/24

Phil is a victim of both his own immense talent and the lottery ticket he received at birth.

The reason pundits and fans aren’t fawning over that pass in droves (and several other passes, turns, dribbles, and layoffs he made yesterday) is because he does it regularly so it has become almost expected and he plays for City, which means he won’t get the type of hype machine the likes of Bellingham or Saka or even Mount have gotten.

He still gets plenty of plaudits, mind, especially from the more balanced and intelligent pundits and writers, hence his FWA FOTY award. He is not without immense praise.

But he’s probably never going to get the level of recognition he would already have if he played at United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barca, or even Bayern.

Maybe one day our younger players will get it, as the former red top has-beens filter out of the mediascape, and our legends start to take up more roles in sport punditry and commentary.

But for now, I think Phil may actually benefit from not getting the Bellingham-level hype. I am not sure it has actually benefited the Real Madrid man long-term, given his petulance and shitehousing on the pitch when he isn’t influencing games or getting his way. It could easily see him burnout, as has been the case with many other young English phenoms.

And it’s not like Phil’s talent hasn’t been rewarded with the only honours that ultimately matter: silverware. Just ask that other English attack-minded player that went off to Germany in search of the glory that has alluded him.

Foden could very well go down as the most decorated player in English history when all is said and done.

Not bad for a ballboy from Stockport.

The thing about Foden is that is ok to doing the odd flashy bits here and there, but you can now see that his all round game is maturing and has done noticeably since the start of the season. It's crazy that his game seems to have finally matured and is only 23/24. He could go on to be our all time greatest player over the next 10 years.

I live in Portugal now with my family, went to brico depot (smaller version of uk b&q) and got talking to an employee who was helping us get some heavy stuff loaded - talk got onto football and the lad said he loved our Phil Foden and raved about him

Quality shines

Foden and Haaland nominated for young player of the season award.

I think Palmer will get that and Foden the player is the season - unless Arsenal get the title in which case it will go to Rice.

It was not his best game, but he worked his socks off and showed why he's outperformed his xG by something like +18 over his career.

Bit of a shit game in truth but still gets a decisive goal. Impact when you're not at your best is what the truly elite do and why he's the player of the season.

He was behind Bernie and Kevin in terms of performance.

Good goal of course, and like Kevin, these moments are why he is undroppable.

But Kevin today lost the ball loads, but still made so many chances, need to see that more from Phil.
