47 | Phil Foden - 2024/25

He's a system player, it's that simple, same as Sterling was. Brilliant if system is perfectly tailored to him, half the player if it isn't.

For years now excuses for poor performances have been because he's out of position. For England it's because nobody passes to him.
He's just not very adaptable.
Only time i remember him dictating a game was in cup vs League 1 team few years ago. He's weak and unwilling to get stuck in too.
What we saw from Maddison yesterday is how many of us hoped Phil would be playing for us by now, a Kev/Dave hybrid. But he just doesn't have it in the locker.

He has a superb shot and an amazing first touch which is why he scored so many last season outside of that he's very limited in what he offers.

may as well get rid of him.

rest of season loan to stockport

Yet Maddison could only dream of having PFA and Premier League player of the year, a trophy haul like Phils or even an England place 'in his locker'... funny that as you seem to be implying Maddison is a far superior player.

He has undoubtedly been poor so far this season, so has pretty much every other England player who was heavily involved at the Euros. This is by no means an excuse just an observation. He's in a spell of bad form along with the rest of the squad.

But to call him 'limited' and 'not adaptable' is absolute nonsense, he's played in multiple positions for city - no.10, out wide, false 9 and he's performed in every role he's been given. I'm not sure Pep is the type to keep a 'limited' player around for long or are you questioning his judgment of a player also?

Good analysis at last - inconvenient truths that many won't stomach of "our Fil". Of course you'll get the comparisons about Maddison's trophy haul compared to Phil's, bizarrely failing to note teams played for, but your analysis about the system having to be spot on is so right.
The issue being that the system that suited him, has slowly been eroded and altered.

What you saw from Maddison yesterday was his one in 20 performance of a life time.

He has never come close to the levels of performances that Foden has and never will.

I think that is the frustration. We all know Foden is far more naturally gifted than Maddison. I don’t think anyone is saying bring him in. Regardless of whether Maddison only plays like that once in a bluemoon ( forgetting the goals) that’s the type of performance we probably expected Phil to put in for us by now. His best position is still fairly unclear. Obviously you’d say centrally but if he’s not scoring he’s not offering much else there.

Jaded after how many games? Just had 2 weeks off from international duty, it was another anonymous display today from Phil? Really want him to get close to last season but seems half hearted at times. His closing down has dropped off as has a few others.
Phil isn’t the only one but as fans we have seen how good he can be. Head up Phil and get a grip of whatever it is.
15 minutes great then like the rest of the team his head went down after their first goal.

Agreed. There are some strange opinions on here. But hey everyone is entitled to one. He certainly isn't a limited player.
