47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

Too hot and cold, he’s 25 now and playing in his preferred position. I really believed by this time he would be challenging for Ballon D’ors etc a few years ago.

Not sure he will ever have the consistency for that now though.

His miss cost us the game for me. I think had he scored that which he should have done then we would have gone on to win. We will
Never be sure but it’s certainly a big game changing moment. It was an absolutely hideous miss. One of the worst I’ve seen from us. Haaland’s was shit too!
He missed two clear chances

Until he improves and gains confidence with his right foot, he'll never become the player we hope for, neither here nor with England.

On the play where he should have won a penalty, Doku played him a magnificent pass, perfectly timed with his run. He was well ahead of the defender, but his choice to control the ball with his left foot and insist on shooting with the same foot cost him time, and the shooting angle narrowed, resulting in that ridiculous shot to the near post that went wide. Alvarez or Marmoush would have ripped the net with their right foot.

I've rarely seen a player so weak or so uncomfortable with his right foot. I'll keep emphasizing this: it's his biggest handicap, this constant desire to get into the ideal position to shoot with his left. Without it, he's completely stuck.

I think Phil has elite talent, but doesn't have an elite mentality. The best players in the world have both, like say de bruyne did. I think Phil will have peaks and dips always, and probably won't quite be the player that we want. He'll still be excellent and one of the best in the league, but I don't think he'll be Kev or david silva level.
Breaks my heart to admit this, am sure he has access to a top sports psychologist.
He is approaching his peak, hopefully he can tap into his potential and work on His resilience.

Halland is peak mentality hopefully he rubs off on him.

On his day he is magical, but you can tell which Phil turns up pretty early into the game.

Gosh! I find it amazing that City fans can criticise one of our best players. He has been arguably our best attacking midfielder this season, one bad day at the office and some seem to be calling for the gallows. I’ve been a City fan since the early 1960s, some of you need to get some perspective. In fact Phil should have won a penalty, it was a late tackle no matter where the ball went before.

Yep but don’t forget for all the real Man City fans on here there are none Man City fans that post continually negativity about the club players!

No right foot. So many instances where he doesn’t pass/ shoot or has to control the ball with his left first before shooting. It happens in every game. It’s his biggest weakness. no professional player would’ve shot with his left from that angle

I agree with your main point as there's something naturally knee-jerk about football fans (not just City) following a disappointing performance

However it does feel as though his development has plateaued and that without playing further upfield he's no longer providing as many goals and assists as in previous seasons, or even asserting himself as a consistent dominating presence.

It seems to me that he's missing Rodri's spacial awareness and just can't find those little pockets without his team mate dragging opponents out of position

However that's more a comment of how much the team are missing Rodri, who before his injury was undoubtedly one of the best players in world football

I can’t believe it either especially as some thug took out his ankle (again) and he WS clearly suffering for the remainder of the game. Despite that he was nowhere near as bad as many have made out.

Numerous of our offensive talent didn't have their radar tuned today. We had our chances and missed most of them.

But so too did Newcastle.

The game was roughly 50-50.

We are allowed to. Its ok, we love him, but as fans we are allowed to question also.

Wouldnt be surprised if he was feeling that studs up challenge on his ankle. Hes had trouble with his ankles.

Speaking of which - WTF was up with that refereeing? Numerous obvious yellows (some from our players) were let go.

Look, I like a free flowing game - but FFS. Some of those uncarded challenges were obviously stopping dangerous buildups and/or were endangering the opponent (e.g. Woltemade's studs on late foul on Foden). Ref was way too lenient.
