5 | John Stones - 2023/24

Stones hasn't been flogged to death though has he. He played against Liverpool on 10th March and then not until 23rd March against Brazil before starting last night. That's not a packed schedule. He's just an injury prone player, as we see with him picking up issues regularly in games or training.

Hopefully he came off before it aggravated anything further. He's a big miss, but sadly injuries have regularly been an issue.
His injuries and the form of Dias maybe why were are looking at Branthwaite.

He looks a proper talent.

When John Boy is fit and healthy there is nobody in world soccer I would swop him for but that's the issue, WHEN and sadly this season it's a constant problem.

Of course John Stones went out and got injured on purpose. Oh he didn't .... no of course he didn't but he also didn't know when he went on the pitch that he was going to get injured.
It's all very well saying... "He's made of glass" "he was bound to get injured" etc. etc., but you could say the same for other players. Who knows if Phil Foden might get injured next time he plays. Who knows if Bernie might get injured next time he plays. No one because we are not psychic and neither is JS or any other player.

Injuries happen, no one knows when they will or won't, they just happen. He can't refuse to play because he 'might' get injured. He is being paid good money to play and therefore being the conscientious and talented player he is he will do his best. Things happen, he can't do anything about it except play his best for whichever team.
If I had been able to pursue a football career and had the chance to play for my country, not having been born in that city at the wrong end of the East Lancs, I would have been honoured and proud to play. Every English player, except the ones mentioned above, would be proud and honoured.

Yes I know you will say, well EB is bound to defend him, but I think I would do the same for any City player. Plays in Blue ...gets my loyalty unless he deliberately injures someone else.

Quotes from Southgate:

But Southgate was unrepentant about selecting Stones against Belgium and said that other leading nations did similar with senior players during this international break.

"We did [with Stones] what Holland did with Virgil van Dijk tonight, what Norway did with [Martin] Odegaard and also what the Dutch with Nathan Ake , but it [criticism] only seems to fall on us.

"Of course I am disappointed if he [Stones] has a problem. It seems to be in the adductor area, so we will have to wait and see.

"But John hadn't played for two weeks before joining up with the squad, so it is not an overload problem. But I hate sending players back to their clubs not fully fit."

And therein lies the problem. They did this so why can't we? No Gareth, each player is different and needs to be managed accordingly. You had Gomez and Branthwaite who could have played but you chose to start a player who hasn't this season started two games in such a short space of time. Just because he hadn't played for two weeks isn't a reason to flog him to death. Whatever England do to players in training / conditioning is an issue. Kalvin goes to a World Cup and comes back heavier and unfit compared to when he went, how does that happen?

When you start with an excuse You know your wrong and hope Pep will tell him so on Sunday because no doubt this moron be there..

He created a straw man and then failed to knock it down.

The issue I have is that this consistently happens now when Southgate has him in the England squad. Question is why?
Absolutely criminal to play him again after a full game vs Brazil and I hope Pep is rightly furious with Stones and with Southgate.
Unpopular opinion but I think Stones should pack internationals in.

All because of a loose touch and stretching when he was pressed (ironically by Doku) - must've just stretched out a muscle. I'm praying it's a precaution, he lives for games like the one on Sunday and helps us control the ball which is going to be a must.
