5 | John Stones - 2024/25

I don't think game time or lack of it comes into it. Purely down to whether he can stay fit which we all know, just doesn't ever seem to be the case. If he could play 35 games a season he'd be up there with any CB in world football.
Not sure it’s fitness. Pep prefers Akanji. Stones is his backup/rotation option.

Yeah but maybe that's more to do with the fact John cant stay fit for longer periods of time.
It’s more to do with Akanji bring undroppable to Pep and the need for Dias leadership or Ake’s left-footedness.

Akanji might get some time at right back, which would give Stones his place.

When was he last injured?

Did he not miss the start of this season? Or was that due to only being back late because of england?

When fit and in form he is a world class CB but for me only a good DM.
If he could stay fit he would be a good replacement for Rodri as DM but we need consistency in that spot. I think he could grow into the role and maybe should have been tried there earlier. I can remember a few games he played there a few years ago and he struggled but maybe it should have been persisted with as it is not an easy role to play.
Might have saved us a wedge on Kalvin-Philips
