5 | John Stones - 2025/26

He is the best CB when fit and he is fit, has been a while.

We look 10 x a better team when he plays.

No reason he should not start.

Remember when some on here here were calling him, various ...?
Well thank fuck Pep stuck by him.
Some of us saw his quality but Pep knew it.
Stunning player. Probably the nearest I've seen to Bobby Moore or Alan Hansen.
Absolutely majestic.
Thank you, Johnny Stones. Thank you, Johnny Stones...

Nine years since that topsy-turvy evening against Monaco at the Etihad. Stones was sat on his backside by Falcao and looked physically weak positionally shaky, but he dusted himself down and ended up scoring and winning. It was all uphill from there.

The city hummed under the lights, the Bosphorus glittering in the distance, and for ninety minutes the game belonged to one man. Every touch carried weight. Every movement bent the rhythm of the night to his will.

He wasn’t just playing football — he was conducting it.
Majestic in possession. Beautiful in execution. Imperious in spirit.

And when the final whistle came, Istanbul knew it had witnessed something that would live far longer than the scoreline.

Tbh if we are to avoid re-writing history, it was pretty nailed on that he was leaving around 2020. Pep had more or less moved on from him too and Stones himself said in a recent interview the club had told him they didn’t want him. If I remember right, a player got injured (can’t remember who) and it put an end to his move to Arsenal and the rest is history.

When fit and at the peak of his powers, probably our best centre back of the modern era, and maybe England's too. The term "Rolls-Royce of a player" was invented for players like Stones. That Champions League run where he was basically running the middle of the pitch will forever be etched into my memory. Will be forever grateful I got to see such a quality player in a City shirt for a whole decade.

Mad that Foden is only 25... for context Giggs played for 23 years and was the most decorated player in English football history. If we're counting major trophies and ignoring the fact he sandbagged 9 community shields - League, FA Cup, League Cup and CL only - Giggs won 22. Foden is already at 15 (small chance of 16 by the end of the season) and arguably could keep playing for another 10+ years.

Tremendous post mate. He was imperious that evening. That performance was his magnum opus.
