Yes pal, I have never used any hand signals in the ensuing 50 years, but you had to know them just in case the examiner asked you to demonstrate them.
Hell, there were still cars that had semaphore type signals on them back in the mid 70s, but fortunately I never had pleasure of owning one.
I believe they were called trafficators.

1970, Just taken a job in Hereford and after a dozen lesson took my test. It was market day and the roads were jammed with farm vehicles, hardly got above 15 mph. Turned into a one way street and had to stop while police tried to shift a broken down van.
Instructor was running late for his next appointment so told me head back to depot. I don't think I drove more than about 3 miles. Hit the kerb turning into the test centre but still passed.

Passed my motorcycle test first time back in Manchester in 1979. Didn't take my car test until 1999, over here. Which I passed, again at the first time. Was a nervous wreck both times.

May 79 Buxton.Nearly killed me and my mates same day trying to overtake when a big jag was going to overtake me on the moors.I’ll never forget that.
Now a driving school owner of 27 years and instead of 6 lessons to pass its more like 66 on average.

Are you sure about the dates mate ...I passed my test first time in 1972 and didn't have to display any hand signals.

Passed first time, 8 lessons, no faults. Was my instructors first ever. Not sure what that says about him. I think what swung it was me pulling into a bus stop to safely let an ambulance past. An ambulance that the examiner didn't see.
