59 years ago - Bert Trautmann's testimonial

I was 12 first time to Maine Road, my Dad had high blood pressure and he was not allowed to go to Football matches in case he got to excited, he was allowed by the Doctor to attend this match. First game he took me to, we stood on the Kippax, I was amazed to be amongst such a large crowd.

You lucky bugger!

My dad worked split shifts for most of his life so regular matchgoing wasn't possible (unless my brother and his mates took me) until 62/63 when I started going with my mate and his dad.

Watching every home game in a relegation season... What a treat that was. We've done a few of them over the years!
I was born in September 1962!

A friend sent me this photo of a street sign in Bert's home town of Bremen

The club should send someone over with a bunch of (blue) flowers for his 100th birthday in October. Edit: make that maroon & white.
A nice day trip for Mr. Summerbee?

(Off topic and can't post the link but i just found a lovely article on Bill Leivers remembering Bert in the Daily Mail from a few weeks back. 91 and the longest surviving F.A. Cup winner.)

I googled it and posting it as it's own thread as it deserves its own thread. Thanks

I'll never forget the great man attending City's game at Villareal several years back.
Bert was carried shoulder high down the main st as hundreds of City fans mobbed him after the game.

Old men, young men all wanted to dee him and shake his hand.

The outpouring of spontaneous love and respect was tangible and very emotional.

A great night all round
