Yeah heard it before, many felt agrieved as D-Day was code for any landing operation and normandy (which was officially called H-Hour) was only one of several D-Days that had happend from 43 yet press emphasided June 6th as D-Day and those other early ones were marginalised and as with the gruelling Italy campaign som regiments were called dogers after having already fought 11 months and left thousands dead and wounded.

The story of the polish army and Monte Casino one of the bloodiest battles of WW2 is fascinating a tale.

Much like the Fourteenth amry, many came back disgruntled at the way they were ignored amd forgotten.

The heroes who took part in D-Day are fast becoming the last of the WW2 veterans.
Every last one of them deserve our eternal respect and admiration.

My Dad was in the far East, he didn’t return home to England after the war until February 1947.
 
While you are watching “Saving Private Ryan” it is worth remembering that the American effort on D day was less than 10% of the men and materiel in the landing force.
Eisenhauer felt that the high losses would not be acceptable to the American public. US forces of course came in once the bridgehead had been established and swept through europe.
 
Was listening earlier to something I'd not heard before... We sent over paratroopers to set up dummies, with recordings of gunfire, to take German troops away from the real landing sites.

It worked, delaying German reinforcements, although most of the brave paratroopers who set these posts up and went on the run, were hunted down and captured or executed.

I could never get my grandad to talk much about the war, although it always fascinated me. He was in the navy aboard minesweepers and the indefatigable, I'm told. He once told me about an Italian submarine they were engaged with, it went right under them...and that was where he stopped the story.

My missus' grandfather was also in the navy, and family lore is that he was slated to be on the Rodney but dodged it for the birth of his first child.

Never forget. We owe them so much.
