7 | Joao Cancelo - 2022/23 Performances

All of our play seemed to go through Cancelo at some point yesterday. He was constantly available cutting into midfield and Bowen did absolutely nowt to stop it.

First half him and Grealish were taking up each others space too much (on one counter-attack they fucking tackled each other!) but second half they’d sorted that out.

I thought he was brilliant at times yesterday. A real midfielder's performance. There perhaps you have the problem that he poses. He's not a genuine full back, especially on the left, and he's not being played as one. Apparently, he has full licence from Pep to roam.

The ball across the box near the beginning was poor. Stupid, too. It's a basic that's coached out of you at virtually every level of the game.
I don’t think it is a problem.

We had 76% possession yesterday, having another defender on the pitch wastes the opportunity to have another attacking player on the pitch when we’re attacking for over ¾ of the game.

Everyone does something daft in a game. It’s when they start doing the same daft thing 16-20 times a season over-and-over again when it becomes a problem.

The five-substitute ruling now changes the way a game can unfold. You can basically play two fairly different games within the 90 minutes, if the type of opponent you're playing requires you to adapt. That favours City, who have the best squad, hands down, in the league.
West Ham are no mugs, but with respect they're not at our level, or close to it. We'll be pushed much harder by Europe's heavyweights. We need that other left back. By the way, I thought Cancelo acquitted his defensive duties well yesterday — apart from that mistake which was just silly, and unnecessary — and I was watching that side of his game closely. But, as I say, it was West Ham (who didn't seem to want to come at us after the first five minutes) — not P.S.G., not Liverpool, not Real Madrid.
I thought Cucurella could have been our man, and I'm still convinced he would have done well under Pep's coaching. But not at that absurd fee. And anyway, that bird has flown.
We need another good left back. Who will it be? Haven't got a scooby. I'll leave that to the professionals.

The problem arises against the better, more ruthless, teams, where his casual approach, loss of possession,or even his occasional petulance....makes the fractional difference and is punished.

He has genuine quality and ability, but its often spoiled by his casual approach and his risky play.
As a left back in the traditional sense,he's more of a liability......in a Pep team,he can be a very dangerous and creative asset.

I guess the positives outweigh the negatives, but he does frustrate and frighten the life out of me at times.

We still need a proper fullback.
Agree. His dribbling ability and skill going forward is superb and he scares opposing defenders to death because they know he is gonna run right at them. There is no other full back like him and he is certainly great to watch. But the one downside, as you say, is that you know there is a stupid mistake coming at some stage during the game causing a minor heart attack haha!!!.
