Absolutely. Best FB in the league, even if some on here don't like him. Walker is phenomenal defensively, but doesn't offer enough in the build-up and the attack. Cancelo is more versatile than any FB in the league and fundamental to this Pep team. He's the closest thing to D. Alves, but even Alves couldn't play on the left at that level.

Just needs to keep it simple like Kyle, cut out the fancy footwork and let the ball go on time. He makes his work difficult for himself and I really don't know why.
That would be too much the other way. Walker is too defensive in comparison. If I said Kyle needs to be more like Cancelo you would think I was mental. I actually think they compliment each other quite well but both have annoying habits.

Seeing as neither are much good defensively, but Trent offers a far better attacking output, I don't see how Cancelo can be better than him.

Kyle's reliability gives him the edge. I believe Cancelo can just be as reliable if he places more emphasis on defending and forget all about the trickery.

I'm not going to argue.
I'll just agree to disagree.

Cancelo's defensive stats are on another level to Trent's, take a look, and Trent had only 3-4 more assists in the league last season while being *the* playmaker and taking most set pieces, unlike Cancelo. If you take only assists from open play, they are comparable, but Cancelo's came from fewer crosses or passes.

Kyle didn’t look overly reliable today for their 3rd as it was floating over his head. How many times have we seen that over the years from him? Plenty. We forgive those lapses because we know that in general he is very good at the things we want from him and we understand that nobody is perfect. As long as the good outweighs the bad in the long run it’s all good. I always think the good significantly outweighs the bad with Cancelo. Some disagree.

I dont get playing him as LB with Grealish, why have two right footed players on the left side?

Both prefer to cut in or cant cross low on their weak foot well (most players cant).

If Foden is there its fine, but he should never pair with Grealish.

Spot on.

Walker is much closer to traditional, pre-Pep stereotypes about defenders: defenders defend, if they can other things, OK, but they should be judged on their defensive actions, especially those closer to our box.

For a Pep defender, the ability to defend higher up the pitch (it was Cancelo today who intercepted Liverpool attacks in their half) is no less important, and also the ability to participate in the build-up play as well, which is vital against high-pressing teams. If we have two Walkers on both sides, our build-up play would suffer, and for a Pep team that means that the defence itself would suffer, not only the attack.

Imo, the perception on Cancelo on here is comparable to Rodri's perception at the start of last season. There were sceptical voices back then that he wasn't good enough.

My prediction: at the end of this season Cancelo will be seen more positively than now, even if he has some poor games here and there (Rodri was still questioned 2-3 months into last season).
