Cancelo has started in 49 from the last 51 PL games (since the start of last season) and in 8 from the last 9 CL games this year (before Sevilla last week).

He's probably started in 39 from the last 40 games for the club, and, that's mind-boggling, in any single game from April to November (excluding Sevilla at home). It's incredible Cancelo has been this consistent for this long. Start Rodri or Bernardo in this many games, and they will look poor, if they don't get injured in the first place. Start Stones or Walker or Grealish this many games, and they'll fall apart fitness wise. Cancelo's been a great asset for this team.

Edit: IIRC, Cancelo missed the 1st leg vs Real due to suspension. So, he only started almost every game from April to November.

The problem with this forum and probably fans in general of all teams in fairness, is the lack of being able to see the bigger picture. We know he’s not a full back in the traditional sense so what’s the point of berating him constantly for not being a great defender? He’s not in the starting 11 more than pretty much everybody else in the squad for his lunging tackles and to just pass the ball forward to players ahead of him like people are used to seeing from their fullbacks. He’s there to keep us on the front foot and put the fear of god into the opposition who are wondering why a player who’s meant to be a fullback is performing like a fucking WC number 10! Haha!
He brings so much to the way we are able to play I think I can forgive him for the mistakes here and there.

Part of the problem is that people use a narrow concept of defending. An absolutely essential part of our way of defending under Pep is how we keep and move the ball, how we build our attacks. Because if we keep losing the ball in dangerous zones, then even if we have Beckenbauer and Maldini in defence, we'll concede more goals than now.

Would we be more solid defensively, if we have a fullback who is world-class in stopping attacks near our box, but is a bit shit in possession? Of course not. Because as soon as we lose the ball, we'll be attacked, and the opposition is likely to score more goals this way. Pep has talked about the defensive meaning of possession many times. Our defence starts with our build up play.

In short, Cancelo is good for our way of defending due to him being vital for our build up play. A fullback who is world-class close to our box at stopping attacks, but is a bit shit in possession and attack, will make us defensively (!) worse, for it will be easier for the opposition to press and counter us.

I don’t agree with everything you post but nail on the head with this imo. Doffs cap

Great going forward but a liability in big games which cost us.
He wouldnt be if he just concentrated a bit more and/or didnt always choose the difficult path.

Obviously his brilliance going forwards is critical to the way we play,so we dont want to blunt that.....but im sure he could tighten up the areas of weakness, and be a much more reliable player for it.

Terrible defender but a fantastic player for the system pep uses . He is played out of position aswell right foot left foot scenario so it is incredible how effective he is going forward. His stats are incredible, imagine if he could defend lol

Weak mentality
Weak physically
Bad defender
Steals space for our world class attacking midfielders on the left, forcing them out wide.

What does he offer this side when he’s not creating goals?

And he’s not creating goals.
