You must be trolling at this point. It's really not that hard to understand that certain types of shot have an increased risk of going wide, but if it hits the target the goalkeeper has basically no chance to save it.

I get where you’re coming from and sometimes people go on about should hit the target when the shot is only a few inches from being a cert goal. Just think it’s very different when talking about a pen though especially with a player who’s had this problem before from the spot.

Penalty is no different to any other attempts. Only a goal matters, so a saved shot and a wide shot are equally worthless.

Sterling is poor at penalties, I'm not disputing that. That's why he isn't our penalty taker.

It is different because if you’re shooting from 20+ yards out you’ve got to give it more to beat the keeper so you might curl it just wide or power it just over. From a penalty it should be on target and frankly you should score but minimum requirement is make the keeper produce a good save.

It's all about which attempt is most likely to result in a goal.

A) 20% wide, 5% save, 75% goal
B) 0% wide, 30% save, 70% goal

Everyone would choose option A, even though it's less likely to be on target than option B.
