Out of interest Billy, do you know/think the club is determined to agree a new contract come what may, or if they would even contemplate selling should the two parties be poles apart in their demands/expectations? Are they not even remotely concerned by the level at which Raheem is currently (and has been for a not inconsiderable amount of time) playing, and/or his potential future effectiveness should we maintain our more controlled playing approach?

There's no chance that the club won't give Sterling a new contract this summer - is what I've been told. Seems to tally with what most of the press pack have been told - that Sterling's next after KDB and it'll be done before the Euros.

Lot's on here have said that he has plenty credit in the bank, due to previous seasons, now he hasn't.

That credit in the bank has ran out,he is now on a credit card, and it is almost maxed out, there is the difference.

He has plenty of credit in the bank as far as I'm concerned. More than half the squad in fact due to how long he's been at the club and the number of goals he's scored.

His transfer value will be affected by his perfromance in the euro's , if he continues his current form i cant see any club in the current climate stumping up anything between £60-£80m and £350k a week , if he has a great euro's it is still a very small market probably only 3 or 4 clubs could afford him
My guess we will give him what he wants and hopefully he then turns his abject performances around , but i dont think Sterling has any particular loyalty to our club similar to his previous clubs QPR and Dippers , he's binned his agent so i wouldnt be surprised if he ran his contract down and filled his boots with his next contract/ club.

It depends on whether those at the club think he can turn it around or even if he wants to, for us. But slapping a big new contract on the table this summer giving him parity with KDB, when there's a huge risk he won't turn it around, isn't going to happen. None of us know what's going on behind the scenes. All we see is his performance on the pitch.

Why would we sell? Lots of reasons but the logical ones are:
  • He would command a decent fee.
  • He's on the balance sheet at a low book value so we'd report a huge profit, even if we sold him for £60m.
  • We'd release enough wages to fund two very decent replacements.
  • We need revenue to replace the £75m in matchday revenue we've lost the last two seasons and player sales are the easiest way to do that.
  • It's been 18 months of generally poor performances, we don't see him turning it around and we can't afford a £300k/week bench player who'll only play in the League Cup or some dead-rubber games.
The other potential ones are:
  • Maybe we don't feel we're getting value for money.
  • Maybe he wants us to sell him.
  • Maybe his attitude in training, or generally, stinks.
These are all good points. To my mind, it just makes sense to sell him now while he is still highly marketable. If we can get £50/60m for him that can buy a couple of new players or is a sizeable down-payment on a marquee striker. It also reduces the payroll by a large amount.

As I said on here last week we are not short of players who can play left wing. We are short of someone to replace Sergio.

His chance against Dortmund at the end of the game, and how he fluffed it, sums his season up. His confidence is shot to pieces. His decision making is constantly wrong. And his ability to do the basics with a football is worrying.

I’m not kicking Raheem while he’s down, but he needs to find out what has happened to his mentality, and to his football. Because as it stands, he should be nowhere near the City 1st team. He’s at best a squad player.

I just wanted to add to my previous comments that not many people in here have picked up on the fact that “it’s been 18 months of generally poor performances”. Most people are saying he’s been poor this season but his bad form pre-dates this season by some margin.
I just wonder what those who think he will turn it around are seeing to make them think that.
