Remember Pep talking about players needing to want to be here, having the desire and not having heads turned.........

Cancelo wasn't moved after he wasn't looking like he wanted to be here during his first season. Rodri didn't look like he belonged at the club either. Stones was just as shot as Sterling is currently is. Pepdoes give players chances to turn things around

Might just be the worst performance I’ve seen from a supposedly elite player. Ive spent months and months defending him from what I feel has been over the top criticism but watching him yesterday made me feel sick.
Something isn’t right with him and until it gets sorted then he should be nowhere near the starting 11.
You can only back somebody for so long and that performance was the straw that broke the camels back for me.

The wacky world of the player forum.

john stones is case and point, the last 3 years tell you everything you need to know about player happiness and form, Sterling will get his new deal(as he deserves) and his form will return.

you can also add Bernardo for the last 18 months if you need a second example....

How does he deserve it?
We don't know he will ever get his form back

I think with Sterling he just hasnt done it this season against the better teams. A good full back with speed and power that can match Sterling over the past 2 seasons has mainly got the better of him. I think his mojo is gone big time. Resting him maybe aint the best thing. As I always thinks he needs to play to get himself back into form. We cant do that. I know more than likely in the Cup final he may well be given another chance maybe his last chance. Just look at the competition for places now hes got competition now with Foden and Silva and Mahrez for the wide roles. Hes not scoring not creating much this season.
Maybe its a bit of burn out for him. Or he needs to score a goal off his arse to get the confidence up and going again. He just needs some luck to go his way. It must be knocking his confidence knowing he aint a first teamer in the big games no more he needs to show that his has a strong mentality to work his way back into the team and become a regular. Like Aguero and Stones over the Pep years have done.

I just think you can have conversations without completely losing your heads, especially as this season could be our most successful ever under Guardiola. It's hardly a moment to be angry in the way so many seem to be (and not just about Sterling although he's obviously the most high profile case).

It's been an unprecedented season for the players because of COVID, no real rest last summer and no real pre season. Nobody has hit ridiculous heights. The best we've had is individuals having purple patches (Cancelo and Gundo in particular), but most of our success has been about the collective rather than individual brilliance.

None of that is to say that Sterling's form hasn't been particularly bad, that's obvious. But there's a wider context that everyone at the club will be aware of.

No matter where Stones or Bernardo’s form or squad position were at any point did I think they weren’t technically good enough players for this team. I’ve maintained that Stones is the best defender with the ball at his feet there is, even when he was out of favour; Bernardo is a technically superb player, great first touch and dribbling ability...

No matter how well Raheem has ever played, I’ve never thought the technical side of his game has ever really been that good. His pace and understanding of where to be in the box were, but never really his qualities with the ball at his feet (although a much better player on the right when it comes to team play, rather than for his own stats).

I don’t particularly think Sterling has gone backwards or anything, I just think the technical abilities of Foden on the left and Mahrez on the right, as well as the slower more technical style we have played this season, have just left Sterling behind.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Teams evolve. It’s natural. Certain players suit certain styles at certain moments in time. We were a quicker more explosive team with younger versions of Fernandinho deBruyne DSilva Agüero and a young Sané playing with Raheem, and I think that unit got the best out of Raz and he got the best out of it.
