Are you talking English Italian or Italian Italian? Spag bol eaten in it's home city of Bologna is the best I've ever had. I can still taste my last one i had now 5 years ago.

But you're right in saying that as there's plenty of unauthentic Italian restaurants in the UK and lot's in italy too. My worst meal over there was in a restaurant in Florence opposite the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge. They charged about 40% more fore a table next to the river Arno. A tourist rip off of nasty tasting packet pasta and tinned sauce. I can cook better myself.
Was in Milan in Sept and had dinner in a local neighborhood pizza joint near the San Siro. I don’t eat cheese, but put other things on there. It was like night and day to any pizza I’ve had before, and it was all in the sauce!

You should go over and sample the food. Italy is very much regional food and each region have their specialties.

Worst Italian over here I've eaten in was Fresca in Delph near Oldham. I had an Italian salad to start and a simple spag bol. I said to my (ex) partner the spaghetti is packet, she didn't know as she'd never been to Italy and tasted proper fresh pasta, delicious.

I politely called the waitress over and asked if the pasta was fresh or packet. She said she isn't know but she'd ask the chef. She came back and said "its packet". I said "i thought so". I asked if any of them are from Italy. She replied "no, were all from Oldham". I wasn't surprised as it was pretty poor. But that was about 10 years ago. I've just clicked on Google to check the name of it and noticed they have 4.5 Google reviews. I take it they're putting proper Italian food on tables nowadays. Either that or some folks don't know what they're eating, or could be eating. Nice place though, ambient atmosphere but a tad pretentious as Delph is a nice area and become gentrified since then.
