Gundogan was very good when we won there 4-1 through covid times and Pep clearly felt that was the best way to set up. We were unlucky in the 0-0 with the Mahrez missed pen but also had a more standard three in the middle that day. And in the 2-2 last season where they were very lucky with that result we had De Bruyne, Bernardo and Rodri in the middle.

Ultimately Pep went back a few years trying to fit in another midfielder and all it did is sacrificed our usual system which all the players are comfortable with. Gundogan could have played in the game but not with De Bruyne. It has to be one or the other. Bernardo and Rodri simply have to start because both are able to cope with the pace and do the defensive work. The question then is do you want more control from Gundogan or more attacking flair from De Bruyne. Instead we tried to have a bit of both but we were lop-sided and it didn't work. I think because we still largely had the better of the game in the 2nd half meant Pep stuck rather than changing things as he should have. Why he didn't after the goal I'm not sure though.

Either way we move on. I didn't expect us to win there so I'm not too disappointed. It's their cup final after all. We've just got to go and win the rest of our games in the league. I can see Arsenal dropping a few from theirs so we could go into the WC break top or right on their tails. Liverpool will still be miles off.

In the closing stages of last Season Gundo was on the sidelines somewhat. The talk was about his bad back and how he couldn't do 90 minutes and might leave in the summer. His heroics on the last day bought him a reprieve and he seems to be getting a lot of games maybe because Fern retired and the guy from Leeds whose name escapes me is a sick note.
In the right game Gundo is imperious but yesterday was not for him.

His back issue was around Christmas/NY. He only played 90 mins in 2 games between the end of the CL group and mid february and only started 3 (out of roughly 12)

After that he was back in the mix and playing as well as ever IMO.

As predicted, all the haters jump at the thread for one mediocre game. City had enough chances to win the game, Ilkay wasted one of them. It's fair to criticise him, as well as most of his team mates. But the hole"he's too slow" "not intense enough" bs without any evidence is hard to believe after he won us two league crowns.

I personally really like Gundo. He's a really clever midfielder that dictates tempo. He's also a threat in the box too.

Anyone in the know as to whether he's likely to be offered a new 2/3 year deal and whether he's likely to sign it if offered?

I wonder if he’s even got out of bed yet. He was breathing out his backside by the end of the game, and it’s only him and Rodri that have played the full games in midfield when our left backs have been sent off this season. He doesn’t need that.
