8 second rule

Was it 2 seasons ago when they brought in the rule of no holding in the box ? After a few weeks they realised keeping players on the pitch was important so they dropped it.

And the "Play ALL the time added on" until they realised that that wasn't feasible either so they dropped that unless the rags are behind and they need a little extra help.

It's a silly rule considering there has been an unenforced 6 second rule leading to a free kick for decades!

Just enforce the original rule! I feel for refs, another thing for them to get wrong. The Arsenal fans will be there with stopwatches showing how it was actually 9 seconds and no punishment for the opposition and 7 seconds for Raya which led to them conceding!

However, something does need to be done as it's ridiculous at times. How many times have we seen keepers time waste against us without punishment. Even when they finally get a yellow they continue doing it without further punishment.

Football fans need to relax a little with the officials. There are issues with decisions on and off the pitch in most sports but they get on with it. Umpire's call in cricket isn't perfect. You can review a decision for one reason but it reveal another issue and still get the result you wanted which doesn't seem right either. In rugby similarly there's the call to "use it" in a ruck which should give the scrum half 3 seconds to do so, but rarely is enforced and they usually use up more time than that.

Just accept it's sport, there will be good and bad decisions even with video assistants because it's rarely black and white.

Thats what I would like to see, roll back the micro-management of decisions and just trust the refs judgement, even the bad calls they make.

We've taken a wrong direction with VAR imo but thats a sepparate convo.

We need a better set of rules so you don't get the idiocy around handball and things like that, but football fans need to accept that a penalty in one game or a red card in one game can't be used as a benchmark for another. You need consistency, but every situation is different so naturally you can't be 100% consistent with decisions. The referees are now under huge pressure and scrutiny which leads to more errors. And with social media you get every single one assessed, reviewed, compared and it's a nightmare.

I think all anyone asks for is consistency. Only a fool or a blind man would say all teams are refereed by the same rules.

Humans can be sub consciously corrupted by external events/noise.

If one recalls the decisions of Alf Grey,Riley, Webb,Taylor and others, I don't need any convincing that they were 'corruptly influenced' by the piss can, the rags dominant media position and support of a needy PL & FA.

You don't have to receive bungs to be corrupt.....Cup finals and top fixtures will do !!

You need consistency within each game, and as far as possible all games. But different games do need different standards. A derby is going to be more feisty so dishing out a yellow for every challenge is going to cause problems and you do want games to flow or it becomes a dull non-contact sport like La Liga's product. But when we see opposition players commit several fouls before a yellow then our players get one for their first challenge it's not consistent.

How about Arse? Whoever their keeper is on the day just sits down and says he’s injured so they can all huddle round legohead, nothing ever said by the ref.

That's an easy one to police. Players not allowed to gather at the touchline for a timeout when there's an "injury". Injured players not allowed back on the pitch for 2 mins (more?) if they receive treatment would put a stop to tactical injuries.

Temp goalie substitution while the first keeper is down, sub becomes permanent if he's not back in 5 mins.

In the test games, three goalkeepers were penalised in over 400 games.

That would suggest that it worked as a deterrent and goalkeepers were just getting on with the game.

It’s certainly not the biggest issue in the game. But it’s something that annoys pretty much all fans. So I’m struggling to see a negative.

OR that there wasn't really a problem in the first place.

Certainty not the biggest problem. But if this forum is typical, you’ll probably find that the majority of regular contributors have had complaints about the amount of time ‘keepers hold on to the ball, at one time or other.

The Brentford fans yesterday were getting in a bit of practice for next season and audibly counting out how long the Villa goalie was holding on to the ball. They were regularly getting up to early 20 seconds.

It’s an easy fix to a current issue for fans. Not the biggest issue but still an issue.

I’ve seen no valid counter argument for introducing it yet.

I'm pleased for you.

EVERY year "Oooh look at us moving with the times. Things happen and we react. Aren't we great!"
(well, proactive is a much better thing to be but, we won't argue....)

Every year after they've made a rod for their own back by failing to implement the laws fairly, evenly, and in many cases even at all, they come up with some little tweak or change and some hail it as "good for the game".

One man's five is another man's four point 8, it'll be abused to help some and hinder others.

I've seen no valid argument for introduction over implementation of existing laws, but each to their own.

Oh, other than "the players aren't very nice and say nasty things to me when I give an indirect free-kick in their area and you should see how hard it is to keep them still until I blow the whistle"
