8 second rule

Coming in tonight in the League of Ireland. I hope it gets properly implemented (it probably won’t when City play).

If they truly do bring this in and apply it to the letter, then I predict Kalvin Phillips will get more game time than Jordan Pickford this coming season.

That lad must have grown up hating football, he's made it his life's mission to make sure as little football as possible is ever played in his presence.

Can see the US taking this a step further in time for the world cup next summer. More than 8 seconds in the keeps hands and it... Multi ball!......multi..ball!!!..….MULTI BALL!!!!!

So players just need to harass the keeper to prevent him playing it within 8 secs to get a corner? Arsenal’s set piece coach will be all over this tactic.
It’s always been an offence to obstruct the goalkeeper trying to play the ball and will continue to be so.

From what I’ve seen of the World Club tournament so far, you forget the rule has even been introduced in most games.

It seems to be working perfectly as a deterrent. ‘Keepers are just getting rid of it in plenty of time.

Like the back pass law this is not intended to be used its basically an incentive to speed the game up let hope it works

They did a similar thing a few seasons ago to speed goal kicks up allowing players into the box but it had the opposite affect and its used to waste time

I thought the change in the LotG, allowing players in the penalty box for a goal kick was a response to the fact teams like to build from the back nowadays.

defenders were forcing the ref to stop the game by stepping in to the box just before the keeper passed it to them?

Goal kicks need a timer on them too. From the ball going out of play, I’d give 15 seconds to take it (put a ball boy behind the goal to specifically give a ball to the keeper immediately).
After 15 seconds the opposition get a corner
Trouble is, where do you stop? Arsenal (and City, to be fair) take an absolute age to take a corner, when they’re winning and some free kicks can take 2/3 minutes to actually take them.

Then yes. Let’s put a time on corners too. It’s cheating the public out of time. Let’s cut the dark arts out. And if the keeper goes down injured on 22 and 77 mins, that’s fine. Trainer comes on and all other coaching staff have to sit on their arses. Any attempt at coaching and they get sent off with a one game touchline ban. Do it again and it’s a two game ban……

Doubt anything will change because the referees will need to enforce it. They have some great laws they could use but, for some reason, they choose not to.

For example, the laws actually state that any injured player must only be treated off the pitch, not on it, other than if that’s impossible.
Any abuse directed at the referee is a red card and, the ‘6 second law’ has never actually been rescinded.
Referees. If only they’d do their jobs…

Or commercial break in televised games

The trouble with that is the laws of the game apply to all football matches, not just top professional leagues.

It would be tricky to implement on a public park on a Sunday morning, when someone leathers the ball over the main road.
