87 | James McAtee - 2024/25

he had a foot injury in 21/22 when he was breaking out and scored in the cl/fa/carabao and missed 100 days.
Still didn't register a Premier League goal even in that period. Phil already had a few at a young age (especially the winner vs Spurs after the "infamous" Champions League game against the same opponents)

The thing is Pep doesn't really trust him that much. Same with Cole Palmer. Something hasn't really convinced him for more starts.
Pep doesn't trust inexperienced players because off the fear of jeapordy that inexperience brings. This current situation is prime time to roll the dice and see what our youthful academy players can give to the team. I see this season as an experiment because we're at the cusp of being in transition and it's up to Pep build another squad, and a part of building another squad is to succeed in intergrating youngsters into the first team as seamlessly as possible.

still looked miles better than mcatee ever did, not the same situation. we also didnt have these injuries back then too
mcatee has also been loaned out multiple times at this point and still isnt shit, palmer never got that chance and i dont even like him.

Still not enough to convince Pep to give more starts and when he did was too wasteful and didn't show any real signs of his Chelsea form.

I don't hate Palmer but his problem was.. he is a 1 position player. Pep would give him time at different positions but he never proved versatile enough and got frustrated.

Lets look at the squad.. other than Rodri, Haaland, Dias and the goalkeepers.. everyone is versatile and can play multiple positions.. so they all share time.

When you're only good in 1 position.. you need to be the best in the world to get time there.

I mean just look at Nunes Left Wing.. but he's proven good enough that he can get time here, there and that's the way. Is he better than Cole Palmer? No.. but he is more versatile and will press and do defensive tackling!

He had managed Foden near enough flawlessly in his earlier years. If he showed real talent he'll get more starts.

I don't either but frustrated that we didn't get to see all that in a City shirt barring the FA Cup and Carabao Cup runs against lower league teams.

McAtee needs to show real talent on the pitch and it's very difficult for him to shine when he's only getting cameo appearances of limited minutes. He needs a run of games but I can't see him getting regular starts here. It's looking like his future lies elsewhere right now.

I agree with that and so far McAtee hasn't shown that high level performances either. I get that Foden is looking more of an exception than the rule but that is the standard any of our promising attacking players must achieve to get a foot in. Bobb has shown glimpses but fuck knows what he is going to be like post injury.

Grealish isn't versatile either.

I don't think McAtee has played enough to show high level performances and it's almost impossible for him to when he plays so infrequently. Sporodic first team minutes will do any youngster more harm than good.
