Delightful player. Intelligent, technical, composed, skilful.

I’ve noticed when he starts games he tends to take ages to “get going”. Once he does, he’s class, but it shouldn’t be taking that long. To be a player in this team it needs to be from the off and he needs to stamp his authority on his part of the pitch.
I’m repeating myself, but could that be because he hasn’t started a game in 10 weeks? I’d imagine it takes time for any player to get going with no game time

He stamped his authority by scoring a hat trick

If he's willing to sign a contract extension, I'd be tempted to loan him out this month - with the promise that a place is there for him next season when the likes of Kev, Gundo and one of Bernardo/Grealish move on.

He needs regular football.

Have to agree with Pep. Some on here get carried away too easily after a 2nd half hattrick against a 2nd division side that was already knocked down, or a great move that led to a 2nd goal at Leicester

If the time is right, JM will start and can prove himself to be a consistent starter. I sincerely hope he makes it. And I think he can.

To be fair. I think the impatience stemmed from the shite we were watching week in, week out and the fact Pep gave McAtee 1 minute of Premier League football during that time.

So the fact he did something out the ordinary against Leicester by taking somebody on and creating something was probably why it was overhyped. Rightly so in my opinion too.

I agree with you, though, in that he needs to prove himself more. But Pep equally needs to give him more opportunities to do that. How can he earn Pep’s trust if he’s not being given the chances?

Hopefully yesterday creates more chances for him.

It's strange, I've followed City everywhere and yet never have I felt further from them.
Why McAtee cannot get Premier League game time is beyond me and frankly so disappointing that it's pissing me off and putting me off.
Why pay over the top prices in January, on players you probably haven't considered before and are buying in desperation, when there are players like McAtee.

Rant over.

He needs to give it the rest of the season to see how he’s treated. Ations not words. Then decide his future based on:

- Whether he’ll ever get serious game time, or
- How he fared if actually given significant minutes.

Should be clear to all by then if it’s worth hanging around or restarting elsewhere. I don’t think he’ll leave lightly but he has a decision to make.

If he’s sold or transferred before then, it would reflect badly on the club.

on the first hour yesterday i thought wow hes shot himself in the foot, couldn't pass, wasn't in the game at all and maybe should of been brought off , then he scored a hatrick, hopefully that was his click moment, knowing where to be and when, finding the space , all part of the learning curve and that first hour would of done him a lot of good, as will the hat trick

I don’t think Pep likes to put young players in when things are going badly for one.

However, we saw yesterday both sides of James and playing in midfield for City, you have to make passes that he failed to complete on a number of occasions. Mind you he wasn’t alone: Gundo missed a few bread and butter passes yesterday.

James has talent but the very best players do the simple things right time and time again.

His goals were very well taken and hopefully he just needs time and Pep’s tutelage to fulfil his potential.

You have to trust that they see players everyday and will be more aware of any negatives they have in their game. It's frustrating and they will make the odd mistake but there is no reason not to play someone you already have at the club if they are better than what is currently in front of them.

Gundo is part of the reason I am getting mighty pissed off. Sadly he is not the player he was so why keep playing him (and others) rather than try youth.
The argument about not playing youngsters when we are doing badly is flawed as he doesn't play them when we are doing well either.
Foden is another off the pace as is Bernardo. Couldn't we at least try McAtee ?

At EDS level, he scored plenty enough. At SHU, acquired the gritty part to his game.

Like with anything, you can’t expect people to just ‘switch it on’ having not played consistently for long periods. Like with anything, repetition breeds familiarity; the players, the nerves on a match day, pressure from opponents, etc.

The variables on a match day are much more intricate compared to what happens in training. Some things can’t just be fully simulated in training. If that consistent game time is available, he may more likely gain confidence, gel better with his teammates, play his normal game, and much more.

It’s easy to speak from the outside looking in when he’s poor but I don’t believe anyone here that does anything physically will smoothly get back into the flow of things having not done said activity for months at a time.

He can be so much better. You can see his genuine happiness playing for City. If he doesn’t make it at City, such is life. I only hope he can fulfil the top class potential that I believe is there.

Pep could try starting McAtee in the league but he chooses not to. If he thought it was the answer to the team’s prayers, he would start him.

James said at the beginning of the season he wasn't worried about minutes and he just wanted to stay and be part of the 1st team squad.

I personally think this was a great decision and will only help him in the future and i would think Pep would be delighted with that attitude.

You could see yesterday all the lads looked composed on and off the ball and look like our future, i'd be pissed off if any of them left, especially this month.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree about Pep. He is loyal to his small squad and very obstinate. EDS players have hardly had a look in during our poor form and that's especially true with McAtee.
Like Pep doesn't make substitutions unless forced to, believing in the 11 he picked to sort it out, anyone of the midfielders or forwards could have been left out and McAtee brought in.
This is what is annoying me, perhaps irrationally, bit the EDS lads should be tried, why keep McAtee at the club this season if he isn't going to be played ?

I agree, mate. I'd start McAtee at Gundogan's expense because Gundo will be knackered from yesterday. But not only that, young James confidence will be sky high after his hat trick. He has the legs to run and the drive to succeed. He must be given a chance starting at Brentford.

But Gundogan isn't starting games lately either.
