Ever since that dreadful run of form over winter time Pep has become even more risk averse to ball turnovers. Under no circumstances does he want us to lose the ball in our own half trying to break at speed.

I remember being at a match earlier this season when Gvardiol had a chance to break down the left & the crowd all groaned when he turned and passed it sideways/backwards, Pep literally turned to the crowd and told them to calm down.

So far away from what we were style wise in his earlier years here.

Hopefully just circumstances. Without our faster defenders, and without Rodri, and with an ageing midfield, the margin for error is so small, so we're taking even less risks than usual, and he was never a huge risk taker.

How do you reckon Kane would've done in the same amount of time as Haaland at City?

He would’ve done his job. Score goals. I’m not sure how he’d play with slow possession wingers in Grealish x Bernardo cuz that’s the era we were in at the time. He was used to spraying balls to fast wingers. He’s deffo not scoring 52 goals like Haaland did in his debut season … I’m not sure he’s showing up in that many big games either. But I’m sure we still win the lot. Just like if we signed Ronaldo we win the lot too

It really isn't too difficult to see what the issue is for Erling.
At this moment in time, our success has led to most teams playing ultra-defensive formations that pack the central areas. There is very often no space for a central attacker surrounded by three or four defenders. Now, we need to find a way, as all teams who are successful for long periods must, to counteract the methods that opponents have developed to combat us. We have to have a more direct approach in our locker. We don't abandon our principles, but we must also be able to break at pace using fast-direct attacks and to utilise the runs in behind. We should also not be afraid to play Erling in some games but not in others: false nine and number nine. You can only set up to defend in the way that our opponents are doing if you know exactly what your opponent is going to do.
It deffo bothers me how we play. He scores his goals like in spite of the way we’re set up. For a guy who did something I’ve never seen in extending for 10 years this team should be built around him. We have to have creativity from the fullbacks, midfielders and wingers. Every player signed must be compatible with Haaland. Doku having 3 assists in 2 years is worrying. Very worrying. Unless he turns into a goal scoring winger like a Vini or Son than we have to make some tough decisions. I don’t see us ever changing our principles only the players signed. We’ll still play the same but maybe Pep will give these new guys more freedom to just do what they think is best like he’s done with Marmoush. Hoepfully Haaland isn’t restricted to only scoring in the box but can run with the ball in transition, get an accurate cross etc. like remember last season during his worst ever season. If you remember we gave him all kinds of chances. Through balls, crosses high and low he was just really bad and had those injuries that he really underperformed his xG if we can get back to that and add more weapons I truly believe we’ll be fine. That season I think we created way more chances for him than his debut season. But anyway cheers great topic

Makes you wonder what the hell they said to him to sign that extension. Did they mention that KDBs going and Doku and Savinho will be creating for him…
Me too I’m dying to know what made him sign for the rest of his career. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy and still shocked but what did they tell him ?? What system are we gonna play, what players will be around him ??

He's under instructions to be in the box, what do you want from him? The game was played almost exclusively in their final 3rd, our slow build up means there's never any option to run in behind and we don't play the ball if there is so there only other option is for him to start dropping to thr edge of the box to do what? Pass it out wide and then not be in thr box if the ball does make it's way there? He's shown he can play as a target man, run the channels and hold up the ball, he has done it brilliantly more than once against arsenal we just actively choose not to use him in that way, he can't decide the tactics the manager uses.

Has the false 9 worked? We were just as useless away to united without haaland. Against Everton we got 2 very late goals after creating virtually nothing like today, against villa we needed a goal with the last kick of the game to pinch a win, wolves was an unconvincing 1-0 where they were the better side for most of the game, forest we were fortunate, palace was the only convincing win and that was after coming from 0-2 down when it really should have been 0-4 before we scored.

Our system hasn't changed with or without haaland, and that's the problem, we've got the best finisher in the world in the box and still play like we haven't got a striker.
What do you think he and Pep should do ? We’re wasting his best years no ?

How do you reckon Kane would've done in the same amount of time as Haaland at City?

Not as well. He'd wanna drop back into midfield too much and do KDB's job and congest the team.

He's not as good a goalscorer as Haaland, despite being a very good one. Haaland averages about a goal a game everywhere, even for a shite international side.

Kane's all around play is better, very good passer etc..but his desire to drop back so deep so often as a 9 would still mean we need someone up top making runs and a good finisher. That's why him and Son worked well. Marmoush would be the one player he'd work well with.

I just don't think his style of play would suit us that much if he was our lone striker, especially when you consider how deep teams sit against us.

Ironically for these reasons, I actually think Kane and Haaland would work well together in a city team too.

Don’t even know what you say anymore, he’s going to be leading the line for the next 9 years…really don’t know where we go from here with KDB leaving.

Awful.. In 3 hours cant score a goal. Has a penalty and chickened out... Awful. The time he spent seeing other teams games maybe he should pratice shooting. Heading. Ball control. Movements etc

Neverwpudkve thought I'd be pissed he'd have a 9 year deal with us

Doesnt look arsed and if he's not scoring hes a horrible footballer

Hoping he finds new life once Pep leaves.... hopefully this summer

Turned from one of the most potent to one of the most useless. It is impossible to get the ball to him because his positioning in the box is DIABLOICAL, nothing short
