A church at Maine Road? Well before my time.

Has colour been added to this photo using present day technology? Colour film was around in the 50s but it’s pretty unusual to see subject matter like this in anything other than good old black and white.
Fascinating stuff regardless.

My Grandad used to tell my Dad that back in the day (he was born in 1906 and we to Maine Road from the very start), locals around Maine Road would leave their back gates open for fans going to the game to park their bikes in their back yards while they went to the match.

Many were just propped up in ginnnels and none were ever pinched.
Can I mind your bike Sir .

I made my debut against your mob aged just eight in 82 (did we also wear a horrible yellow and orange kit in 76?) at Hough End and scored twice in a big win.

The rest is history, we went on to win three successive West Area titles :)

I remember your old school well, my folks would never let me cross Lloyd Street but me and my mates would always sneak off to play kick-can inside Broadfield Road bud depot, just down from your place.

Our main rivals were St Eddie's, Wilbraham, Heald Place and your mob.

Good times.
I can't remember your kits but ours was all yellow so that would have been a clash. Good times indeed.

I would think a 6.30 pm KO would require floodlights (even in mid-April) ,and floodlights were first used at Maine Road in 1953.
So it looks like the 1955 date is correct.
Competitive matches under floodlights didn’t happen until the 1955/56 season.
The first floodlit Football League game was Portsmouth v Newcastle on 22/2/56 (I had to look that up!)

Platt Lane stand looked the same (after the New Main Stand roof was built) until that monstrosity of an enlarged Subbuteo like stand replaced it. I fuckin' hated the new Platt Land and Kippax stand. Two of many fuck ups sanctioned by the cheapskate, Swales.
You ought to get dozens of likes for that!

My mum lived on a street that was on the field opposite the City Chippy.
She made pocket money by minding peoples bikes in the back yard.
Her and a friend would stand with a sign at the end of back alley and directing fans to her back yard.
Obviously a forerunner to the "mind yer car for yer mister" generation.
When she was 14 the family moved to the newly built Benchill / Wythenshawe and her lucrative sideline was over.....

Another long gone landmark was the Claremont Road ABC cinema.
This was built the same year as Maine Road opened (1923) and demolished in 1976.
The first picture shows its imposing position on the corner of Lloyd St / Claremont Road opposite the row of shops where the City Chippy was with the Nat West bank on the corner.
My mum's house was in a row of houses behind the cinema. The cinema and houses were knocked down and became the school field.
