A debate with a proper rag

I think we would have fared better, given the defensively-minded midfielders we have available.

Whether we would have beaten then, I am not so sure.

Listening to talkSHITE this afternoon, some rag clown rang and said that taggart should have played Park as a sweeper.

Yeah, right. Use a system that none of the players has ever seen before. Really clever.

Yaya, Silva and De Jong or Carrick, Giggs and Park. It's an absolute no brainer.
Tevez and Balotelli or Chiquitita(or whatever he's called) and Valencia. Easy.

United players might as well have been sat in the stands.

With respect, Barcelona would have schooled you, Chelsea or Arsenal just as badly. They're vastly superior to any team in our league at the moment. I'm actually happy United knocked us out after seeing what awaited them in the final.

The Barca front 6 would have no chance against Barry, Lescott, and Kolarov.

Let's be honest, Barca in top gear at the business end of the season are the best team ever. Not only because they're all midget genius' but because they're so hard to play against. At least the brilliant Brazil, Ajax, Milan etc sides let you have a kick of the ball.

united tried to play two tight banks of 4 to contain barca, but it failed msierably because they wound up sat incredibly deep. the midfield were playing on the 18 yard line and the defence on the penalty spot. We've played like this (v Arsenal away) and done, it but we do it playing to our strengths. United haven't got the players for it.

Look at the amount of space outside the box for Villa's goal. No outball to Rooney because he's so far away. hernandez even further. They gave too much respect and were guilty of what so many teams (are you watching Holloway, Bruce, Allardyce, Mcleish?) do for them; of getting beat before they crossed the white line.

Having analysed the game, this is probably the closest to what I was thinking on Barca's play. It's an incredibly clever system of play and one built on complete trust that team mates know where the other will be, based on their triangular play.

It's not as simple as that, though, as they step up when they play in triangles, which allows them to play 'between the lines', therefore looking like they have acres of space. Two further things happen from this; from defence to the final third this intricate play in the midfield draws the opposition closer to the play, or narrows it as it were, allowing a forward or deep lying midfielder to 'spring the trap' or the full back to get unnoticed around the outside as both situations are not picked up(especially potent against a static system).

In these scenarios, the opposition is drawn the the work of the ball, rather than the team movement. It's also interesting that to work the oppo to death, up until the last third, you will find it hard pressed to see a Barca player have more than 3 touches of the ball, before release. But they MUST work the triangular step up movement to find space or it breaks down.

Like I said, ultimate trust.

Again with respect, I think you'd have a better chance that United and I don't think you'd have given Barca all that space. You've got better players than United. I'm not convinced you'd beat Barcelona though - with them on that form I don't think anyone would. Especially with Messi playing the way he does. Their overall play is just too good at times.

Barcelona are the team i most want us to get drawn against in the Champions League. Not just because i believe that its an easy 6 points for us (yeah right - in case it needs spelling out, i am only joking there), but because the whole point of being in the CL is getting to see city play these teams. Also if we lose twice to Barca we could still finish a comfortable 2nd.
