A new city badge?

City are looking into a "new" badge according to Cookie. There are rights issues with the old one, so City might end up with a slight redesign of the old one. It's not top of the list of things to do, it's more complicated then people think, and it couldn't get done this season. Stay tuned.

There's nothing that says Manchester City more clearly than the old roundel. It's simple, classic, a kid could draw it, and in keeping with the ethos first outlined by the Sheikh when he took over the club (the bee is an example of it), a slight redesign looks in both directions. The new badge is too "busy", was designed by experts *cough* who, at a time when City's fortunes were at a low ebb, concluded that a Roman eagle and three stars (for that euro and dynamic *cough* feel) were just the thing to take everyone's mind off the true state of affairs.

The eagle is a european golden eagle, as used by Rome, and brought to Castlefields courtesy of the XX Legion, Valeria Victrix (whose own standard was a boar).

I really don't think we should change the badge again. It's fine as it is, and as much as I love the old round badge, for me it's too deeply ingrained with the many failures of the past, given that it was worn the most throughout the 80s and 90s. Growing up following City in the late 90s I can't help but associate it with those dark times. Mind you, we did get relegated to the third tier for the first time during the current badge's inaugural season! And even during those relatively successful times in the late 70s we wore the Manchester COA.

Here's a wacky, crazy idea. Why don't we substitute the three stars on the current badge for three bees in the same gold colour as the stars, like the bees on the COA? They could further emphasise our 'manc-ness' and offer something more symbolic than the stars. Or would that look a little stupid??!!

I for one would love it if they ditched the 'new' badge.

Its likely a generational thing though as my kids have never known any other and changing it for them would be how we all felt when they moved from the roundel.

If they went back to the old one I would be happy enough as I have never warmed to the current mish-mash of symbolism.

One thing I do know though is that when we are in a cup final they HAVE to use the COM crest - not to do so would be a massive dropped bollock.

The use of the COM crest all the time would be a great idea as it would show our 'unique' ties to the COM.

Any Idea what the Eagle represents?

I hope it does mean something and is not just an inanimate animal like some of the Rugby teams here in Oz...

South Sydney Rabbit-o's FFS
Manly Sea Eagles
Parramatta Eels you get the picture....
it was supposed to be a phoenix rising again, thats how i heard it back in the day!

I like the badge we have, I would say the only limitation is that we don't quite yet have the brand awareness and I would like to see our full name incorporated into the badge somehow.

I have noticed a number of times when abroad wearing the shirt and you can literally see people staring at the badge to identify which team it is and MCFC just isn't enough.

I never liked the new badge although now it has a certain phoenix from the flames thing going on...

But I hanker for the old proper badge or summat like it. With a nice ship on it... :-)

If there is to be a new design it must incorporate our classic ship and the 3 rivers of Manchester. Personally I hate those horrid 3 stars above our current badge. There have been some great efforts on this forum at designing a new badge. Perhaps there should be a competition and let us fans decide? I would also like to see the Lancashire Rose somewhere on the badge.
