A new way of playing....

That's one of Pep's greatest skills as a manager. Turning a team without the brilliant and beloved Sergio into a team that scores even more goals. I expect Pep to memorize us all using a slightly different approach. It's going to be exciting thats for sure.

I think we will play a number of systems this season given the new arrivals. We can now also play with a front one or two. Personally, I would like to see us trying 4-1-3-2. I wouldn't mind seeing us try this system against the professional mourners in the Community Shield. Potential starters.....

Haaland Alvarez

Phil Jack Kev

Phillips

(Cucurella) Dias Stones Walker

Ederson

Happy to swap Bernardo, Rodri; just like the set up as I think we have the players to be really effective with it.

I hear what you are saying. Some of the best managers of all time have been great man managers without necessarily being great tacticians. Look at Ferguson. Not a master of tactics but obviously was a man manager. However nowadays the likes of bruce/warnock/pulis etc are seen as very outdated.
Players no longer want the manager to be your mate and to organise team bonding days and days out on the lash. They want tactics. Shape. Working on spaces. Working on the opposition.

Owen coyle by all accounts was a great man manager and tried to create a happy positive group. However he had no tactical nouse about him and never did any work on the opposition or on team shape. The players quickly fired off him and took it upon themselves to do shake and tactics. Eventually he was sacked.

I think pep is a genius and keeps on reinventing how we play. I also think he’s a very good man manager and that’s why the players do what they do for him time after time. But without his Brain and tactical knowledge there’s no way he would command the level of respect he does.
Only need to look at our mate Ole to see how far "arm round the shoulder, go out there and enjoy yourselves" management gets you at the top end of English football these days. Both Pep and Klopp's teams will brutalize teams who give up even pockets of space or lapses in tactical concentration, as shown as we and Liverpool battered United home and away in differing combinations of tactics. Both managers would have eaten up Ferguson alive, accepting for the fact that Ferguson was a quick learner and might have adapted in this era.

Could be an interesting season, as it's not just City who've refreshed the squad a bit; Liverpool & Chelsea will be a bit different too ... I imagine their fans are asking similar questions to us.

In the end, you have to trust in Pep ... he's rarely got it wrong (domestically, anyway).
