Think they were made from a blend of cotton with a bit of polyester blended in, and the fabric had tiny 'breathing' holes in it. Like the kit you would wear at school.
The replica shirts Umbro did in the late 70s had the round club badge, whilst the official players shirt had the crest as modelled by WD in the photo.
Cotton shirts are always better than polyester I think, since they are to be worn socially or on holiday etc, and cotton doesn't make your nipples bleed.
This explains a lot. I have the shirt I wore on the plane when I emigrated in 1978 but I could never find the shirt online to see which season it was from.
