Cheating, ahem - research suggests Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, William IV's wife.

Great question, btw.

...............was sunk by a submarine?

Well I never.
Well, technically she was holed below the waterline and scuttled by the crew.

Ha ha!

Really?

Well, the answer in the pub quiz I was at, last night was Queen Ann (hence the bow legs clue) - and we guessed correctly, too. F**k em. They're not getting their wine & chocolates back now.
Apologies to all, if it wasn't who I thought.
I'm definitely right onvthe submarine question, though.
Not American, Confederate, British, Dutch, Spanish or Greek or Roman or Venetian or whatever.
Happened in the 1800's.
No, Anne is right on a second look.

2/ Which country's navy was the first to be attacked by submarine?

The American submarine Turtle attacked the British Royal Navy's HMs Eagle

Sorry, not the right answer either.

EDIT:Just saw Ag 93:20's latest try. Also wrong, I'm afraid.

I'm starting to feel like a smug twat now, lads (even moreso than usual!).
If nobody gets it by 5.30pm, I'll put ye out of yere misery, if ye like

There is the possibility that you might be wrong you know.

Anyway - why don't you give us a clue?

Which year?

Which sea?

The submarine was invented by John Philip Holland - an Irishman, living in America.
(He once taught school in Dundalk, Aguero! That's why I thought you'd know).

Named, the Fenian Ram, it was funded by the Irish Republican Brotherhood. But it wasn't used to attack the British Navy...
