Santa in bag at City

Stuart Brennan

June 20, 2009

ROQUE Santa Cruz is set to seal a £17m move to City on Monday - subject to a tough medical examination.

The Blackburn striker is due back from an extended holiday in his native Paraguay tomorrow, with an agreement already in place between the two clubs.

The deal, which was negotiated before Santa Cruz headed out on holiday, sees the Blues pay a £15m fee, with an extra £2m payable, based on the player's appearances.

But Santa Cruz's problems with knee tendonitis last season, which culminated in an operation to remove a loose fragment in the joint in April, could still scupper the deal.

City will insist on a more rigorous medical than the regular inspection, although Santa Cruz claims his injury woes are behind him following the surgery.

Offer

The signing will not affect City's chase for Carlos Tevez and Samuel Eto'o - and the Blues are still hoping to land Joleon Lescott from Everton for £15m.

MEN Sport understands the Blues are still favourites to sign Tevez, and hope to announce a deal early next month, while Eto'o is weighing the offer of Champions League football made by Inter Milan against City's promise to make him the world's best-paid footballer.

Felipe Caicedo's agent has hinted that the striker may be on the move, with Sporting Lisbon and West Ham also interested.

He said: "Other clubs have asked about Caicedo but his future does not only depend on the player as City will have the final word."

On the way out of the club is Dietmar Hamann, set to join Munich 1860, while Danny Sturridge is still interesting Chelsea and Sunderland are still keen on a £5m deal for Richard Dunne.

After all he did say Tevez to sign on the 1st July!

Let's hope SB didn't just read that on here and then repeat it in the MEN ;)
