A thread about protesters

Protestors usually have unrealistic or lofty demands it doesn't make their disruptive actions less of a protest.

We already have massive waste from poorly insulated homes. Is it wise to waste limited resources on inefficient use of energy by doing nothing or take action to solve it?
If the insulation saves more than the heating then it should be done. If it doesn’t, perhaps because of the nature of a particular building that makes insulation uneconomic to install, then don’t do it. I’m not against insulation!

Protest is vital to democracy. It shows elected leaders the views of people and how strongly they feel about them.

However, these kind of events are not protests. They’re not aimed at demonstrating strength of feeling and changing views democratically. These events are a kind of extortion: “Do what we want or we’ll mess your lives up.”

In any event, the demands of these groups are so unrealistic that they call into question the actual motivation of the activists. Stop the use of fossil fuels by 2025? Insulate every property in the UK at taxpayers expense by 2030? No one could seriously think these goals can or should be achieved. As such it is clear that the actual aim of the activists is to force people to provide them with the status and acclaim they crave, rather than to actually do anything positive for wider society.

Well if people like you had listened in the 80s then it would have. You can't beat the sad logic of its too quick so let's avoid it. And then every time it's too big of a job, might as well say fuck it. It's actually pretty depressing that every year that goes by the same shit happens.

Some of those protesting were born in the bloody 1880's.

:)

If you’re talking about climate change co2 emissions have fallen 50% since 1990 so it’s simply not true to say the same shit is happening. The UK goal is currently to end emissions by 2050. Not 2025/30. The UK has hit every carbon budget set so far. We are on course to achieve a very difficult goal but there seem to be many intent on undermining this by pretending nothing has been done.

I’m obviously not against taking action on climate change. My point is that it should be democratically agreed on a logical basis, not imposed by loony activists.

You aren't going to suggest a referendum are you?

Today about 1pm it involved the whole shebang. Anyway I probably need to get in tune more with what's going on. It just wasted our time and had my 8yr old crying his eyes out being caught up in it all. They were all out in force protesting coz of the tory press conference in town.

Oh, forgot about that. Despite the 'colapse of the red wall' it still surprises me they hold their conference in the north and not some Tory safe-seat where they won't be as troubled by the great unwashed.
