A trip down memory lane around Manchester....

Does anybody remember The Manchester Show at Platt Fields Park? We used to sneak in every summer in the 70s and 80s. Sort of an urban attempt at a county show, a weird hybrid of dog agility competitions, the latest motors from Manchester Garages, a Piccadilly 261 roadshow, a few bands and comics of varying quality (although Happy Mondays played it in 87, see picture below) and best of all for a young kid, The Red Devils parachutists. From the south end of Longsight we would watch them coming down on the Wednesday and Thursday before as they practiced for the weekend, with the red and blue smoke trailing from their boots.
Remarkably little online about what was considered a big deal in Manchester at the time

I well remember the Manchester show so well described by you.
I remember taking my new Brownie 123 camera one year to one of the early ones and there was a fly past by a Spitfire. I snapped away and eagerly sent my film off to be developed. When the pictures came the plane was literally
an unrecognisable dot!
I seem to remember 5 a side tournaments at the show one year as well.

It was where Tesco is now, think the clock tower still exists. The bus depot in Sharston reputedly had the largest roof without internal supports in Europe.
It was at Parrswood, next to East Didsbury railway station.

I was there - a great day. Big Flame were excellent, as were Marc Riley & The Creepers. Everyone had gone to see James though and I can remember the two comperes (who had been painfully unfunny all day) begging people to stay as thousands (including me and my mate) left before Simply Red came on.

That's right. I only got there in time for James...so i missed some decent bands. I got to see Yargo a fair few times around town over the years though.
Here's a link to a live bootleg of the James set. the quality is a bit shit unfortunately but still of interest..

Savile used to share a flat in Higher Broughton with Roger Moore! True. My mate lived near by....He told me that Savile used to get all the kids ice creams....I obviously asked if that was a euphemism; "NO...it was ICE CREAM"!!!
He always suspected that Roger Moore would be the next celeb to get investigated due to that link.
I knew a lad from Salford in 1966 who was virulent anti-Savile without saying why. I can hazard a good guess.
I also worked with a girl who had been a teen model. She hated Owen Oyston and his side kick for the same sort of reason.
