Went to Abu Dhabi in 2005 ' pre - Mansour '.....unlike Dubai where they have gone bust, it was very orthodox. There was lots of building etc. but not like Dubai. THEY have learnt from Dubai's mistakes - in fact, their oil will last for 100 years; Dubai is finished in 20 thats why Dubai built up their tourist industry to compensate for the loss in oil revenue. I've been to Abu Dhabi 3 times since then and going again in August. 18th so if any AUH Blues out there - do you still meet at Le Meridien bar for the games or have you moved on ?? Hopefully game on a Sunday so I can go and watch the game as arriving Sunday very early.

The Dubai economy is not oil-based..It´s a trading and financial centre, basically the hub between the arab world and asia.

Made its billions from oil; certainly initiially though didn't it ?? Being in Abu Dhabi, you know better but DXB has financial problems as they are building up tourism in a big way, eh??

They certainly overextended themselves on real estate, but it is the same country as Abu Dhabi so in the end $20bn found its way from Abu Dhabi to Dubai as something that was described as everything but a bailout..but of course was.
It´s only 120 km between them after all, and Dubai are something of shopping and entertainment centre for everyone in UAE anyway.

Right - but I was told that although they are the same country, the Emirates ( 7 of them ) are run independantly and that Dubai had to go cap in hand to Abu Dhabi for a bailout/loan etc......is this misleading or accurate or partly accurate ? I'm interested because I visit the Middle East quite frequently ( holidays ) and love the place.....as well as Oman. Hoping to be a game at NRG Bar in Le Meridien weekend or 18/19th August and/or 25th/26th August....was at QPR game - magic !!!

Well, the UAE is a federation..the seven emirates run themselves internally apart from the federal jurisdiction, the military etc.
But de facto acknowledging the real powers the Abu Dhabi Emir is always President of UAE while the Dubai Emir is the PM.
The federal budgets is also paid by Abu Dhabi almost singlehanded.

Abu Dhabi itself is mainly run by the crownprince who heads the AD supreme council..He´s the guy in red cutting the cake in the "Sheikh Mansour celebrating" thread

But yes, Abu Dhabi do come to the financial rescue of any of the emirates..but in return they loose a bit more independence of course.
There´s no free lunch..anywhere
