Bored. Insomnia.

I have a feeling the wikipedia list is incomplete....

anyhow I have some questions;

1. what happened to the team that won the FA Youth Cup 2008?, we have just 2 graduate in the squad and it seems that local players aren't getting a chance to get in the team?
2. who is better Ireland or Rodwell?
3. who is better Sturridge or Nimely?
4. what happened to Cassell (used to manage/coach the youth)?

Here is a list of the players in the 2008 FA Youth Cup.
Those with a number next to their name indicates their first team appearances, those with an * means they are still at the club so could play more.

Gregory Hartly
Kieran Trippier
Ryan McGiven 1*
Dedryck Boyata 10*
Ben Mee
Scott Kay
Vladimir Weiss 5
Andrew Tutte
David Ball
Daniel Sturridge 32 (Robbie Mak)
Donal McDermott
Sub Filip Mental
Sub James Poole
Sub Angelos Tsiaklis
Sub Abdisalam Ibrahim 3*
Sub Alex Nimely 2*
Total appearances 53*

If we look at the list further:

Gregory Hartly-Think he's now at Chattanooga FC which is the 4th tier of American Soccer and looks a bit of a fat bastard.
Kieran Trippier-At Burnley and one of the higher rated Right backs in that division.
Ryan McGiven 1*-On loan at Hibernian who are 2nd in the SPL, will never make it here but will forge a decent career at a lower level.
Dedryck Boyata 10*-Look promising but has gone backwards in the last couple of years, now at FC Twente on loan.
Ben Mee-At Burnley with Trippier as the first choice LB.
Scott Kay-In the development squad at Championship side Huddersfield after being at Macclesfield.
Vladimir Weiss 5-Now at Serie A side Pescara, not consistent enough to make it here.
Andrew Tutte-Forcing a successful career at Rochdale.
David Ball-Now at Fleetwood after unsuccessful spell at Peterborough.
Daniel Sturridge 32-Chelsea back-up now they've invested.
(Robbie Mak)-At Nurnberg in the Bundesliga.
Donal McDermott-At Bournemouth after an unsuccessful spell at Huddersfield.
Sub Filip Mental-On the books at Dundee Utd.
Sub James Poole-Played plenty for Hartlepool, rated him personally.
Sub Angelos Tsiaklis-Without a club I think after being at FC United and Wrexham.
Sub Abdisalam Ibrahim 3*-On loan at Stromsgodset in Norway after failing to develop on initial promise.
Sub Alex Nimely 2*-Was on loan at Coventry but for a striker just doesn't score enough goals to be wanted.

You have to realise that it takes the academy so much longer to catch up to the level of our first team. That is why we are doing the Etihad Campus and only just starting to bring the academy up to where it will need to be eventually, it takes time when so many of the kids that have been in the system in the past couple of years were trained under the old system with the old coaches with the old expectations. Guys like Weiss & Trippier would still be here I reckon if we hadn't been taken over.

As much I would like to think otherwise, I do think that team would struggle.

Couldn't resist a look at Chattanooga FC's website!
I do remember Gregory ''GREGGAA'' Hartley being a little on the small side for a keeper at 5 ft 10

Not small round the chin or belly though!

Given the time effort and resources put in so far the results are well below expectations.

I hope the new initiatives bear much more fruit as good quality academy players need to play in the first team of the future for a variety of good reasons.

3-4 long term regulars must be the goal and must be achieved.

But what are the expectations?
How many former rags / Chelsea and Arsenal youth team players are proper first team players (not League Cup only players) with that side??
When the transfer net is now cast world wide, developing a youth team like we did in 1986 is a thing of the past.

That is the expectation , especially developing English born players , nothing to do with what the other premiership clubs do in respect of their youth.

We are currently in a position where our academy should set the benchmark in world football with maximum retention at our club.

Look at Ajax and what some of their youth did to us on Wednesday
