Never in a million years did Downey jr own Sherlock Holmes. There have been some excellent portrayals of Sherlock down the years, Basil Rathbone on screen, Jeremy Brett on the small screen and more recently Benedict Cumberbatch.
I think of all of those before Robert Downey jr when I think of Sherlock Holmes.

I think some people are misunderstanding the thread. It's not about your favourite actors or your favourite films or even if they were good in the part, but actors who did such a brilliant job at playing a certain role than you can't imagine anyone else doing it.

Craig Charles - Lister.

When he applied, he went for the role of Rimmer. I just couldn't imagine it. I couldn't imagine anyone else ever making Lister who he was.

Really? I didn't know this!

His character was spot on, and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing it.
