Boro seem to think if we got 4m raising to 7m for sturridge they will get about the same if not more for Johnson so don't want to sell for 5m.

MANCHESTER CITY have upset Middlesbrough chiefs with their bid to sign star winger Adam Johnson.

Boro are furious after two faxed offers of £4m arrived on Friday afternoon from Manchester City and North-East neighbours Sunderland as they regard that amount as insultingly low.

They have vowed to fight the move for the highly-regarded England Under-21 international who is now keen to talk to Eastlands manager Roberto Mancini to hear what he has to offer.

Riverside bosses believe that if Johnson stays with them until the end of the season, they could get in excess of the £7m package that City themselves picked up at a tribunal when Daniel Sturridge went to Chelsea.

The 22-year-old, left-footed Johnson has been in prime form this season, netting 12 goals, and Boro manager Gordon Strachan wants to keep him until at least the end of the current campaign with the Teessiders still aiming at the Championship play-offs.

Middlesbrough feel the Sunderland-born player, who they have reared from a trainee, has been deliberately unsettled and a senior source told Sport of the World: "We are disgusted by Manchester City's conduct.

"They have come in with the transfer window ready to close and put in a derogatory offer. He has had his head turned but we still believe we can turn it back."

No I don't work for the NOTW...
