I liked this substitution for more than reason.
Shaun was one of the City players that saved us from relegation on more than one occasion when Pearce and Keegan were in charge. His transfer, looking at it positively, saved us from £62m worth of debt after the ludicrous spending of money that we didn't have by Keegan (£5m on Matias Vuoso). And Shaun, of course, cracked it in off the bar to win the Derby 4-1.
That brings me to think that, as well as it being an energy saving and tactical change, the substitution was for sentimental value as a reward to Shaun for the amount of years he spent being an exceptional player in a very average team. It brought a small lump to the throat to see players from the City of a few years ago being brought on in a winning FA Cup Semi-Final. It was great to see the one and only survivor of the times when it wasn't so easy, being introduced onto the new Wembley pitch.
But Shaun's introduction made me see just how far we've come as a team since the 2004/2005 campaign. Shaun was one of the best players through that season in a team that featured Trevor Sinclair, Richard Dunne and Nicolas Anelka.
Now we head to Wembley for a second time in four weeks after not being there for twelve years. Come on, boys, let's show Stoke what you have.
