Adam Johnson - Potentially how good?

He has the potential to be as good as any winger in the world, he doesnt have the lightning pace most wingers have but his technical ability is immense, the fact he is so comfortable dribbling on both feet scares full backs as it makes it alot harder to mark. Aslong as he keeps his feet on the ground and works hard he should spend the rest of his career playing at the very top, no doubt.

For the £8M we paid (with the add ons included) this lad must be breaking most other PL managers hearts.
Anyone could have had him,but most didn`t want to gamble !!
Well fucking tough shit !!
By no means the finished article and he will need a few rests over the coming months, but if he can become our Giggs,in the talent sense, then we really are looking at a true star.
No need to swear.

What the fucks it got to do with you ??

HE IS NOT GOING TO PLAY FOR A STUMP INTERNATIONAL SIDE HE WILL BE WORLD CLASS BECAUSE HE WILL HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL CAREER PLAYING IN TOURNAMENTS UNLIKE THE ILLEGITIMATE ONE.

I agree with those who say its a bit early to say. His crossing could be better but there's no doubt he's a trier and will improve.
My big worry is that all of the PL know by now that, on the right flank, he won't go outside a back, nearly always trying to cut back inside. They'll be waiting!

How strange that he got the penalty against LFC because he went wide on the right and in the England game v Switzerland, also went to the right hand bye line and squared the ball to Defoe who blazed it over.
Think you should him more closely !!

Did i just read one poster suggesting AJ's on the end of his learning curve and Micahs ready to go again...

His lack of outright pace will not hamper him, he's fast thinking and knows well when to do nothing and make opponents feel the heat, his 'change of pace' and feet is the fast bit....it cocks defenders up and they will have to swallow or drop him because he can easilly (for fun) gain the valueable yard needed. I'd think thought about who our free-kick specialists are going to be (left/right) would be advantageous to the club because we will be touching for plenty.

I think Johnson's type of player develops in three stages. 1st, when they first come on the scene and defenders struggle to cope with their skills. 2nd, there is a period where they get worked out by defenders and aren't finding it so easy any more. And 3rd is how they deal with that.

Ok I know that's over simplifying it some what but, there is a grain of truth there.

Potentially excellent or world class or maybe just average, that's the trouble with potential.

A couple of years ago many were talking about Micah Richards being potentially one of the best in the world, I couldn't see it myself. I think Johnson has more chance of a career at the top than Micah but you see the point.

Micah is younger and in a position that peaks later. Extremely difficult to compare them for me, still think Micah will have another surge in development while Johnson is probably in his last.
Agree with you about the different ages of maturity regard positions, but I would still expect to see at least some development for as long as Micah has been a first teamer, I genuinely can't. I'd love to be proved wrong but I just don't see any area where he is better than when he came into side, he's always been strong in the air and a good tackler when in the position, unfortunately his positional sense and concentration don't seem to have improved. Mistakes which are rightly forgiven for a youngster coming into the first team shouldn't happen as often at this stage in his development.

Johnson's ability on the ball is there for all to see, a lot of what he does now looks instinctive and it's enough to give most defenders a hard time, if his consistency and tactical game keep improving though, he could be a top top player.

As good as Giggs in his prime. I realise that might not be a popular opinion but at his best he could tear teams to bits. Hopefully Johnno will be the same.

unbelievable tekkers. althoug i hate giggs, it's clear he has looked after himself , and been one of the premierships greatest players. AJ should take a look at his carrier because in terms of footballing ability, he has the potential to be better than giggs, but theres more to been a great footballer than just been good on the pitch you have to be good off the pitch..... like wayne rooney :S haha!!!!!

Wow.
Yeah that's over the top. He has good technique, good awareness, good crossing ability, good turn of pace, good work-rate, good head on his shoulders, and he's direct and commits people. He has an awful lot going for him, but to compare him to Giggs is silly at this stage.

Giggs has been consistently brilliant for 15 + years. Johnson has had a top quality 2010. Despite them being both left footed wingers, i think they are quite different anyway. I'm not saying Johnson can't go on and have similar success to Giggs, but at his age, Giggs had already been doing the business for 5 or so years in the Premier League, and Giggs is probably a more complete footballer, who has adjusted well at a time where he is no longer as quick as he once was. Johnson will need to be able to make that adjustment at some stage later in his career, if he is to ever get anywhere near Gigg's level i'm afraid. That's why it's far too early to tell.

I don't think he'll improve much more 2bh, he'll be a very good player but never world class, he doesn't have the pace to his game and isn't as clinical or consistant as a Messi, Ronaldo etc., I think he'll improve a bit more talent wise, a lot more knowledge wise, and will be a very good player for us for years to come bar injuries.

I'm not going to believe the best winger or better than Giggs hype, I fell for that on Weiss a couple of years ago.

been waiting 3 years, for what, 2 or 3 appearances in a blue shirt where he's been at about the same average standard.

As mediocre as Shauny has been for the past 18 months or so(with some flashes of brilliance), Weiss has never really come close to taking him out the side to the point where Mancini has bought AJ, Milner and Silva to play ahead of him and shipped him out on loan again.

But if he's a late bloomer like AJ then suits me fine.
