Adam Wharton

The talent is there. At the moment he's a highlights player at best. Got a stupid and petulant red card at the weekend. I'm sure I made a comment on Eze that I wasn't quite sure he was good enough for a top club. And he's hardly playing now. I get the same feeling with Wharton. Right now, he's not good enough. Too many poor performances, too many loose passes, not good enough in front of goal. Don't get me wrong I think he has all the attributes to turn into a fantastic player. But right now, Palace is his level.

I can see him going to United/Liverpool if we get Anderson.

The fact United are sniffing around Anderson says they want a similar player.

Think Wharton has slightly regressed this season. Still has some decent progressive passing, but he’s making errors and has zero goal threat.
I know what you mean but have to factor in his surroundings?

Poor team, lost key players, manager one foot out the door.

I think he’ll be a good singing if he goes to a team that suits him and has good players around him.

I guess the main issue is his value. Palace are known to sell but he’s young, English and talented. Not sure what sort of fee they’ll ask for?

Oh absolutely. Palace have fallen off the proverbial cliff this season.

We’ve only see him play well in that system though, so it might be a risk when changing systems.

He may be struggling too because of the physicality of the man to man duelling that’s taken over too.

He doesn’t have the physicality that Arteta or Emery would require of a midfielder, so they’re out.

That leaves Liverpool or us. Think he’d be a sub at either and as you say, he might be an expensive sub.

I was always on the fence between Wharton and Anderson but it ultimately depends on what you want from your midfielder.

Anderson can do pretty much everything but excels in workrate, tackling and is more than good enough at passing whereby Wharton is a fantastic - almost unique - passer of the ball and breaks lines but quite weak defensively and always looks knackered to me. Not somebody you'd want in the trenches, per se.

Ironically, they'd be a fantastic pairing but right now, I think Anderson is a better all-rounder.

He’s not regressed it’s normal to have these performances when the team as a whole is going through several ups and downs and losing players. Manager out in summer. Hard to keep focus.

But what is also obvious that people ignored prior is Wharton may be a really good passer, but he’s never been a duel monster and generally weak in tackling. More evident as the season has progressed. Hes a good complement to Rodri, but Anderson as the engine and duel winner surpasses everything Wharton can offer.

If Rodri were to leave Wharton becomes a better option. If Rodri stays I'm going with Anderson regardless of who else leaves. I believe in the long run NOR may turn out to be better than Anderson.

100% Anderson regardless of who stays or goes. He will glue together a lot of what we are missing defensively. With him in the team we will run riot next season.

If Rodri were to leave how would Wharton be the better option? Ball progression comes from actually having the ball. If we never have midfield possession because none of our midfielders can tackle bar Nico (who is not very mobile), it’s pointless having Wharton.

So you don't think a pairing of Wharton and NOR would work? My point is Wharton is a 6 in the deep lying playmaker mode as is Rodri. While an excellent 8, Anderson is not a deep lying 6.

8 years ago, he’d have been a supreme signing.

With the shift to man to man marking and his lack of physicality, he’d likely be a liability in the biggest games.

Even with the shift to P & P there's always the need for someone technical to control the tempo from a deeper position. Especially a squad like ours who don't play with 2 pivots. I love Anderson as a player and hope we get him. I'm just saying Wharton is a better replacement for Rodri specifically. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that...

I just can’t se how Wharton replaces Rodri.

Gundogan, maybe, but the game’s changed.

If not Wharton, then who? Not Anderson. Even if Nico G continues evolving as a 6 who else do we have that can play at the required level in that role. NOR, Reijnders? No and no for me...

We’ll have to give Reijnders another season and see how he adapts.

Rodri, NOR, Nico G and Anderson would be a formidable 4 to pick from for 2/3 spots, with the third being alternated with Foden, Cherki, Reijnders etc.

Is Wharton better than Foden or Cherki? For me, not for £70m.
