Advice needed re possible speeding ticket

£10 less for speed awareness course and no points. Everybody I know who have been on the course say it is just a time wasting effort to tell you the bleeding obvious.
Then “everybody you know” is wrong. I opted to go on one just before the first Covid outbreak, rather than take the 3 points, and it was way better than I expected and covered several things I hadn’t previously been aware of. I’ve been on a lot of shit courses in my lifetime, but this wasn’t one of them…..

Yes I know but I would just have lost my temper on a speed awareness course having driven for so long without any offence. Too old now to bother about the cost I am just going to take it on the chin. I bought a new VW Polo in September 2021 and have not yet done 5k miles so very unlikely I will get many more offences if any.
I had been driving for 40 years and my job involved driving too and hadn’t got a speeding ticket in my life till I got caught on a long straight dual carriageway with on of those cameras that can see you from a quarter mile away . Ironically had to go to the local race track to have the course. Not too bad and like someone else mentioned it tells you a few things that you might not know or have forgotten like how to tell the speed limit without the signs and haxzard awareness so rather than have the points keep your clean licence although at your age I doubt you are still working mate

Exactly bud, people get as much out of them as what they put in, too many people go with a pissed off, know it all, don’t want to be there attitude instead of being open to learning.
It often amazes people how little time they actually save by speeding.

Apt location ;)

Still pretty active, and 78 early next year. Passed my driving test at the first attempt while I was still a teenager, where have all those years gone.
As you took your test so long ago, it'd do your driving the world of good to attend the speed awareness course
I passed 40 years ago and for the last 30 odd have driven a minimum of 30,000 miles a year, so I'm thinking I know it all
I took some very good information from the course

Did one about 10 years ago, doing 36 in a 30 at 2 in the morning. The 'course' lasted 4 1/2 fucking hours, full of middle aged folk going marginally over the limit, kept my mouth shut and got signed off. It's literally all about the money, no discretion like there used to be.

I think you need a refresher test, a lots changed since those days. Gear stick on the inside, headlights that work at the flick of a switch and no one walking in front of you waving a red flag...

I got caught speeding the other week. In the States its a 4 hour video course and you can pause it and restart another time.
I did it over a week in 4 hourly sessions and then I was doing other things while listening to it and going back to the lap top when it asked the odd question it threw in to make sure you are still there

Do these new digital cameras still have the same 10% leeway?
I've recently been on a speed awareness course and informed this leeway (10% + 2) does not exist, its like an urban myth. If you go 1mph over you are speeding, there are other factors as to why you may not get a NIP in the post such as fixed cameras not working, paperwork going missing, no proof of calibration of speed devices.

It's all a revenue exercise and the easiest way to fuck them off is don't speed and drive like a little old lady.

Fair enough. There must be some leeway as you see cars go past you when doing 70 in smart motorway zones and they don’t get flashed.

I got done once in 2003 when a mobile camera got me doing 56mph in a 50mph motorway roadworks zone. Had to take the points.

Got done in 2016 at the lights near city, again just over the 10% and did a speed awareness course.

Anybody who says they haven’t sped isn’t being truthful. Cruise control is great for smart motorways.

Speed doesn’t kill, lack of distance between you and the car in front does.

Tailgaiting at 70mph on a motorway is far more dangerous than doing say 90mph with sufficient distance for you to react in time.
