Afghanistan

Extract from the memoirs of a British Army chaplain
-
"a war begun for no wise purpose, carried on with a strange mixture of rashness and timidity, brought to a close after suffering and disaster, without much glory attached either to the government which directed, or the great body of troops which waged it. Not one benefit, political or military, was acquired with this war. Our eventual evacuation of the country resembled the retreat of an army defeated”

This was published in 1839, following the first Anglo-Afghan war.

Absolute joke we went in there in the first place. I'm not sure what we thought we could achieve?

They are a medieval people who believe in medieval ways

All that time, money, and blood spent to try and help improve and its come to nothing

The Afghan army we spent billions training and arming ran off at the site of the Taliban

If they can't get help themselves why should we waste our soldier's lives to help them?

I feel bad for the women and kids who are now going to be used as sex slaves and persecuted but honestly we should leave them to it.

I wonder to what extent the current government are actually sympathetic to the Taliban and were just waiting for the Americans to fuck off to admit it. They've got the bigger army and better equipment and yet the Taliban have been able to take the entire country in about a week, and they're now arranging a peaceful handover of power from a democratically elected government (sort of) to an autocratic dictatorship without a fight? I call bullshit on that.

Just cant imagine the total fear of those citizens about to see their protectors fly off into the sunset leaving them to the most barbaric regime. Understand the arguement it's not our fight but what must be going through those people's minds right now knowing what's coming.

Unless the US fucked off, having some sort of agreement with the Taliban.

I imagine it depends on what leaving them to it entails.

I doubt it. Didn't they have loads of opportunities for a peace deal? I can't imagine they'd not announce it, unless they're trying to save face. I reckon the people in charge of Afghanistan are opportunists who were happy to tie themselves to the Americans when they were the bigger boys and now are happy to switch sides as long as it keeps them in some sort of power. Kinda like an Asian Boris Johnson.

The US signed a peace deal with the Taliban last year. This has been on the cards for a while. Initially the US was going to pull out in May and Biden delayed it to August.

The Taliban has been in control of over half the country and been negotiating for months over the rest which is why we are seeing it fold very quickly.

The Taliban controlled half the country with the Americans there. The previous Govt was pretty much a fiction that only existed because of the US presence.

This ‘war’ was lost years ago. Last years peace deal made this loss formal and now we are just seeing the end game being played out.

The biggest surprise is seeing people who are meant to know about these things being surprised.

There was an interview with the Taliban they said the American told them if they don’t have these terror camps they will not interfere with them!

Now your read what the Taliban are saying that the transition of power will happen peacefully and saying we don’t want a single Afghan Innocent civilian to be injured or killed. Is this a change of tact from the Taliban?

Senior military sources say the Home Office is reluctant to give many of these people asylum because of the message it will send to other refugees.” @Times

In addition to leaving behind people who helped us in the shit, we’ve even pulled visas from students who won places to study here.

A month is a long time in politics and Afghanistan’ @guru-Murphy

There is a special Afghan programme to re-settle those who cooperated with UK armed forces.

It doesn't matter what message it send to other refugees as they have already been granted asylum.

Poor women not being able to complete their degrees, about to be thrown into a Sharia law cesspit. Women ready to commit suicide than live under it. Abandoned them and thrown em to the wolves.

It's their country , the need to fight for it not us . We are not the worlds policeman or moral compass .

Easy to say sat at home behind a pc though isnt it. The women of Afghanistan don't stand a chance against the Taliban who have now taken all the military equipment America provided the Afghan army. Whole thing was a shit show lost too many good lads in Afghan for their sacrifice to amount to fuck all. Disgraceful.

That's what happens when you invade another country , and yes that what we and the good old USA did . We spent years training their army but as soon as we pull out they give up . 20 years and nothing has changed how many more years do you suggest we stay and lose lives as I say they want another form of government they need to fight for it .

Biden's press conference seems some what farcical given events from today.

Complete shambles, a lot of hard work undone which has mainly been enabled by the men of Afghanistan.

And where is our government or foreign secretary on one of the biggest UK foreign policy failures in modern history?

No doubt we'll suddenly hear something urgent around COVID come out about this week to detract attentions away. Lockdown anyone?

There’s your answer.
