Afghanistan

Still some places on guided tours.

I expected them to be cancelled

I hope that the Kim Il Sung Birthday Tour on April 11-17th doesn't clash with a potential Champions League quarter final.

What a total waste of time , but most importantly what a total disgrace that so many lost lives on a conflict that a) could never be won and b) never had an end point.

well the end point is that the country is totally back to square 1.

the powers that be should hang there heads in fuckin shame. Tony blair is a **** of the highest order and has A LOT of blood on his hands

I was over the mountains
and over the sea
by hercules transporter
to fight the Afghani
with a rifle in my hand
to set the country free
but it you're picture in my pocket
that means everything to me

Now I'm sucking dust in Helmand
dug into Lashkar gar
where the local weed and opium
beats ang British bar

For the boys who didn't come home
thanks to the Levellers - they're take on the Recruiting Sergeant.

Eh?

Mixing up Afghanistan and Iraq aren't you?

From a purely practical standpoint, you are absolutely correct. It's just too difficult to successfully intervene.

But from a moral standpoint, it is tough to just standby and watch people being treated so terribly and to do nothing simply because some they are the other side of some arbitrary line which we call another country. We are all humans on the same planet.

If you saw a neighbour beating his wife or god-forbid, his kids, I would hope no-one would say "it's up to them what they do in their house/garden". Yet if it's done in another country it's OK? Doesn't sit right with me.
Or as Neville Chamberlain said, "people in a far away country for whom we care bugger all."

Tony blair took uk troops to afghanistan. He didnt have to, only he had his nose buried in GWB’s ring piece. Same as iraq. Although he lied on that one.
guys a war criminal
You have a point, but unfortunately any other British Prime Minister would have followed America into that conflict.

We played the most important role after the USA and incurred the second highest losses but see belligerents on the allied side below. We were always going to be involved.

NATO

Unfortunately, it feels like a forever war. And that was probably the point from the start.

Afghanistan is a wild, lawless place with unforgiving terrain and arbitrary borders that force hundreds of tribes under one roof and split others down the middle.

Of course the constant fighting and radicalizing future generations (either through conflict or directly funding and training them) only makes matters worse.

Just fucked all around.

Wholly pointless war in a lawless tribal state. Whatever that war cost would have gone nicely to putting the minimum wage up here, properly funding mental health services and my pension.

It wasn't a pointless war, it was a legitimate one. What was pointless was the efforts at nation building afterwards.

Well, it wasn't necessarily pointless just futile. Sad how it's all unravelled in the way it has. Tragic really.
