Aguero - 'Born to Rise'

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has written in his autobiography how he wanted to be like former Manchester United and Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

The retired striker and now football pundit came through the youth ranks at Anfield and went on to represent the Reds 297 times in all competitions, scoring 158 goals in the process.

After stints at Real Madrid and later Newcastle United, Owen had a three-year spell at United where despite not being a regular he managed to become a Premier League champion in 2011.

Aguero’s fond memories of Owen were certainly not of him becoming a league champion with the Red Devils but 13 years prior to that in France 1998.

Watching on as a 10-year-old, the Argentine striker witnessed Michael Owen become a world star as he netted a sublime goal for England during their eventual 2-2 penalty shootout loss to the South Americans.

"City fans might not want to hear it. But when I was a kid I wanted to be Michael Owen." He wrote, quoted by ESPN.

"I've always liked Liverpool. I'd play a lot of video games and I'd be them, because they played in red, like Independiente, my first club, Arsenal or Chelsea.”

"When I saw Owen score that goal for England against Argentina in 1998 I thought: 'You little s***!' Even aged 10, I knew they couldn't allow him that much space. He was a terrific player at that time."

Upon hearing of Aguero's revelation, Owen Tweeted

Nice one, Sergio!

I wonder if this revelation will alter his commentary 'style' - I wont hold my breath.

I'm getting this book as soon as it's out. Looks like it will be very insightful into behind the scenes at city

Me too. Looks like it's a good read from what I have read up to now.

Coming to England when I was 23 and being able to join the squad at City was a great decision.

And what can I say about the fans? Whatever words I find, they will never be enough. From day one, I have felt their wonderful support, which has given me no choice – in the best sense – but to try and return this affection on the field of play.

Fortunately, my team-mates and I have been able to do so. To have won two league titles, a Community Shield and a Capital One Cup in three years has exceeded all my wildest expectations.

The book then reveals how Aguero came to sign for the Blues...His representative Reguera Hernan took in a meeting with Roberto Mancini at his house in Italy. Manchester City’s manager wanted to tell him about the project and why he believed Sergio could have a crucial role to play in it.

Sergio was ultimately convinced when he learned more about the club’s wider project, as well as the quality of the squad he would join, which made him feel certain – deep down inside – that the team would be in the position to fight for trophies.

Negotiations between the two clubs gathered pace, as did the final details of the deal that Hernán Reguera was in charge of penning with City’s directors. And on Tuesday, July 26, alongside his father Leonel, Sergio flew from Buenos Aires to Manchester, via London.

City’s people were waiting for him when he landed at Manchester Airport and they immediately took him to the private hospital for his medical, before moving on to the offices at the Etihad, where he signed the contract.

Sergio’s enthusiasm was there for all to see as he started, almost immediately, to take English classes three times a week.

During those early days, he also took the opportunity to find out more about the history of the club, about its present situation and about its plans for the future, which impressed him more and more. He learned of the enthusiasm of City’s fans, of their glory days at the end of the 1960s, and of the subsequent years of struggle when the team was relegated on several occassions

Good to see those English lessons bearing fruit.

Just been on the club website to order this but it wasn't there. Anyone know why the club aren't selling a players book? Whilst looking I noticed Richard Edgehills book is missing too. A bit strange I thought the club would be supporting players and ex players with this sort of stuff.
