Aircon re-gas

I bought my car new less than 2 years ago. A few weeks ago the aircon wasn't working so finally took it in on Friday. They rang me to say that there was no gas in the aircon system and they'd have to fill it up and they'd have to charge me for that as it wasn't a warranty fault.

I queried that on the basis that (a) I rarely used it and (b) while I accept it would lose gas over time, it shouldn't run out after less than 2 years. They challenged this on the basis that they couldn't see a leak (although they'd put a dye in to see if there was) and that the seals would leak if not used regularly (on checking the manual it recommends using it for 10 minutes per month). On my previous car (which was an earlier version of the same model) I also rarely used the A/C yet I don't recall ever having to re-gas it over 7 years.

They did say that if it did prove to be a fault, they would refund the money but I think they're bullshitting me about it not being a fault. Can anyone tell me who's right?

I had mine refilled recently after it stopped chilling. The mechanic told me that if it was a leak there would be no residual gas before refilling. I've found the bit of paper and it says 30g of 750g of gas was still in the system so it had just reduced over 6 years to that level and needed topping up.

Try to get the printout from the gassing apparatus, this will tell you.

I asked them and they had to pump 470g into a 500g system. And that was after little more than 18 months. So completely empty.

I've seen it said that about 10% should be lost per annum with normal use.

I've had this same problem, wasn't Arnold Clark by any chance ?

No. Nelson Mandela. Sorry - Nissan main dealer.
Same happened to me with Arnold Clark.I argued that's it's never worked properly from purchase. It keeps emptying out every year,so it keeps going back free.Had a right ding-dong last time, they said they weren't going to do it free this time,I called him an idiot who works for a mess of a company and will stop at nothing to let everyone know what kind of service they give. For some reason within 2 hours, they phoned me back to try again plus courtesy car. This will be the fourth time, last car was 5 years without an air conditioning problem.Don't tell them you don't use it,as it is supposed to be used quite regular to keep it working.
Also if you're not happy with their outcome, slaughter them on twitter, this has worked every time for me with many companies.

Yeah, my loss works out at 10.7% per year over 9 years. I've been advised to have new gas every 3 years but have never bothered on any previous car without experiencing any meltdowns. But you never know how much better they might have worked if I had followed advice.

18 months does sound poor but manufacturers will inevitably claim it is consumable and therefore not covered. Is it working OK now you've had it gassed again?

I've not had our VW's working for a couple of years now. I miss it (it's been warm!) and can't open my drivers windows due to 'perforated ear' issue...and then that horrific 'booming' you get when the kids open the passenger windows.

Anyone tried re gassing the air con themselves? I had a bloke round a few years back who mentioned I could do it myself (Vauxhall mind), but in the end I paid him to do it.

Unless its a different type of gas than we use over here (freon, I believe).
Then surely to god they have to be responsible for it leaking out into the ozone?
Huge fucking fines for not recapturing freon whenever doing any work on aircon systems.

It works fine now. So I'm going to make sure I use it regularly and when it goes in for another service (probably around Christmas time) I'm going to make sure it's checked.
