Album Of The Year 2024 - Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown

Apparently making lists is a must in musics, so I'm told. So I've gone full Rob and Ob1 on this one.

My top 25 of the year, which will come down to a top 10, in no particular order or as they occur to me:

Sprints - letter to self
Marika Hackman - Big Sigh
Orlando Weeks - Lolla
Teen Mortgage - 'compillation'
IDLES - tangk
Bob Vylan
Local Natives - But I'll wait for you
DIIV - Frog in Boiling Water
Fu Manchu - the return of tomorrow
Greenleaf - the head and the habit
Cloud Cult - alchemy creek
Soft Play - Heavy Jelly
Deadletter - hysterical strength
Man of Moon - machism
W.h Lung - every inch of earth pulsates
Joe & the shitboys - reason for hardcore
Gurriers - come and see
Hamish Hawk - a firmer hand
Los Bitchos - talkie talkie
Michael Kiwanuka - small changes
High Fade - life's too fast
Talk Show - Effigy
Pissed Jeans - half divorced
Gary Clark Jr - jpeg raw
The Bad Plus - complex emotions
Chatte Royale - Mick Torres plays tok fucking loud

Other notable albums I gave a go this year by bands I l like that don't make it into the top 20 for various reasons, including sometimes a lack of commitment on my part.

Yard Act
Neck Deep
Alkaline Trio
The Dead South
Mother Mother
The Snuts
Yard Act
The Black Keys
Sum 41 (why not)
Feeder
Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties
Maggie Rodgers
Pearl Jam
Alien Ant Farm
Iron and Wine
Camera Obscura
Arab Strap
Jesus and Mary Chain
Beth Gibbons
Say Anything
Apocalyptica
Nick cave a d the bad seeds
Eels
The Decemberists
The Story So Far
Phish
Al Di Meola
And So I watch You from Afar
The Cure
Good Looks
Blanket
Amyl and the sniffers
Cursive
Julie
Ezra Collective
Maximo Park
Fever 333
Public service broadcasting
DAWES
Bodega
Touche Amore
Pixies
Primal Scream
King Stingray
October Drift
Wunderhorse
Zeal and Armour
Honeyglaze
Katherine Priddy
Orca Station
Tape Runs Out
Asteroid no.4
Withered Hand
Bill Calahan
Her Picture

And finally a few bands I really like that released EPs and singles but no albums but still worthy of a mention for their contribution to my year.

Midnight Ambulance
Snash
Soapbox
St.Pierre Snake Invasion
Indoor foxes
Cleopatrick
Memorials

I'm down to a shortlist of about 15 at the moment, have more overlap in your second list than your first. The one album that I thought I would like this year that didn't do it for me was Kim Gordon - The Collective which reviewed really well but I just couldn't get into it.

Btw - you seem to have left out your Country picks in your lists :-)

I listen to very few new albums being stuck in the late 60s and 70s. Of the few I listened to this year I thought the Vampire Weekend album was interesting ‘Only God was above us’. Reminded me of a few bands I like.
Completely forgot about the new vampire weekend record. Thanks for the reminder

Bump for anyone else that wants to send in their 2024 albums by Tuesday.

Do you just listen to music day and night ?

One I’ve only just listened to this week, came out in October:

The Eggmen Whoooooo! Fuzzy Eggs, Please

IMG_8567.jpeg

If you like a bit of acid psych rock mixed with a bit of punk mixed with a bit of rock‘n’roll mixed with a bit of garage rock, this lot from Neath in Wales are well worth a listen.

Fellow Welsh band, El Goodo, described this as ‘The Greatest Album Of All Time’ on their Instagram, upon release. They didn’t mean it, plus one of El Goodo (Pixie Jones) is in The Eggmen Whoooooo!, but it was a nice plug for a new band and the album is mega!

Indie/Folk too. Enjoying the latest Johnny Delaware album upon first listen today from the Playlist Review nomination from @RobMCFC. I think Rob will have some support in this one.

Glad you enjoyed it. I’d never heard of him until a few weeks ago and had a listen after reading a review of the album. It’s very good.

Best album I've listened to this year is Forgiveness is Yours by Fat White Family

Other good ones are Woof by Fat Dog, No Name by Jack White and I quite liked Songs of a Lost World by The Cure.
That Cure new release is as advertised. It is making mine. Will check out those others. Still have time...

The good & bad news is I'm now taking albums out of my existing Top 10 list. Hmm, good call for Coatigan to stick with 10 after all. ;-)

Not sure if anyone else has already said it, but Magdelena Bay - Imaginal Disk is the answer

Here we are, and the big winner is Beth Gibbons. Followed by Waxahatchee, who drew the highest number of votes. From a total of 82 albums put forward.

I have to admit, not listened to either of the top two, so will finish the year off with that.

I included albums PM'd to me, and also went through the thread and included any post that listed more than one album, even when two were put up. Where someone simply said 'this is the best album of the year' I took that as part of wider conversation, although most of those did PM or post a wee list as well.

No reason for people not to discuss their and other albums further however.

Full list below.
