Album of the year - 2025

Amsterdam is definitely bottom of the pile.

To be fair to Milan, we went in November when it was lashing down with rain, and stayed a bit too far out of the centre (only our 3rd city break when we weren't as good at research and planning). The Piazza Del Duomo and the Duomo itself was the clear highlight. 2nd best was the Starbucks roastery that had recently opened - a bit like Charlie & The Chocolate factory for coffee lovers! Apart from that, meh, can't see what all the fuss was about.

There are no really any other cities that disappointed on the level of those two, so I guess it's a clear bottom two.

My least favourite of the big cathedrals in Italy tbh but that's partly because of the way they run it. Once you get away from the hustle and bustle, areas like the Quadrilatero del Silenzio are nice. Biggest thing wrong with Amsterdam is the tourists themselves!

A great album, a return to form for him
Yes, and a genuinely good record, best since Days Like This and that was 30 years ago.

My lads, 26 and 24, said he was rubbish live supporting Neil Young this year. They both reckon the Geese album is top, and it's definitely Top 10.

Tidal tells me I listened to 866 unique artists in 2025. I expect my Tidal listener age, if I had one, would be 17.

Every time these threads throw Midlake at me, I like what I hear. Really should bump them off the guest list and into my permanent cortege.

For those of you that noted you liked the new album, this year's Seryn release In the Walls is well worth a listen. Similar mood and sound, really well put together.

I say release, as it is a collection of songs and b-sides, that haven't featured on previous albums or EPs. That one, rather than their recent Christmas album which is a bit clichéd (to be cynical at Christmas).
Midlake @ Gorilla early February 26

Last few days for anyone else that wants to join in.

I've enjoyed these two albums in 2025

I only really liked two albums in 2025.

Cut Glass Kings - From A Distant Place

Brummie lads who are The Coral’s Skeleton Key Records. At times they’ve got a bit of a BRMC sound, a bit of a Darker My Love sound, a bit of Ride’s shoegaze pop, a bit of The Charlatans, there’s a glam rock sounding track… one of the tracks even sounds like it could be something off George Harrison All Things Must Pass.

[Favourite tracks: ‘Seven Signs’ or ‘Only The Fire’]

Little Barrie & Malcolm Catto - Electric War

Typical Barrie Codogan album, but not as heavy since Catto has joined the band. His drumming is more intricate than their 2010s sound so the album is quite laidback and a bit cooler. Probably more like Codogan’s Cobra Lamps sound.

[Favourite track: ‘My Now’ or ‘Count Of Four’]

And they are the only albums from last year that I listen to all the way through when listening and don’t skip tracks.

The only other album I put in my list to @Coatigan was Doves - Constellations For The Lonely because ‘Cold Dreaming’ was my favourite song of the year, but I didn’t love the album.

I didn’t fill any album slots from 4-10. I nearly didn’t put Doves in. 2025 was more a year of good tracks than good albums, for me.
