Album of the year - 2025

I've been a bit like a hyperactive customer at a jumble sale sifting through numerous albums to see if I can bump up my current 6 or 7 albums to a round 10. There's always bargains to be had and so fat tucked under my arm is Matt Berninger's Get Sunk. Not sure why I didn't listen to it when it came out.

Put back in the pile are efforts from Alan Sparhawk, The Cardiacs, Geese, Modern Nature and Bad Bunny (that really was a punt) amongst others. Put to one side for possible collections later the Besnard Lakes, The Weather Station and Snocaps (Waxahatchee and her sister).

The usual 3+ listens that those on the album review thread get is a luxury that many won't get. I'm looking for if not instant gratification then something that at least piques my interest enough for a second listen and maybe more.

Modern Nature,The Besnard Lakes would be in my top 25 but probably not top 10.
I reckon not enough people have heard Besnard Lakes as I think they would be right up some of the posters on the other music threads alley.
The Matt Beringer album is very good in fact the best thing he's done since the early National records.

I've listened to both Besnard Lakes and Weather Station before without getting too much from them but like both of these and will probably explore more, erm in the January sales, or something

Don't think it is in any way difficult to guess my top album of the year. Not quite as good as their last year's one, but still for me the best I've listened to all year.

Every time these threads throw Midlake at me, I like what I hear. Really should bump them off the guest list and into my permanent cortege.

For those of you that noted you liked the new album, this year's Seryn release In the Walls is well worth a listen. Similar mood and sound, really well put together.

I say release, as it is a collection of songs and b-sides, that haven't featured on previous albums or EPs. That one, rather than their recent Christmas album which is a bit clichéd (to be cynical at Christmas).

I really like the Modern Nature album, some great understated guitar on there.

You're right the Modern Nature album is good. I think I only thought I'd listened to it when in fact I'd just planned to, even to the extent of having it cued up and then for whatever reason didn't.

I've not been able to get into other stuff of theirs but read a brief review saying that this one was more guitar based and it certainly does hark back to the work he did with Ultimate Painting who released three great albums of as you say understated guitar based pieces.

I did think in retrospect it was too far down my 10 but I had trouble ranking this year. Even my #1 was decided as much by who she has been over the years as it was purely about the album.

Get yourself tickets to see them yet?

No, been trying to persuade Mrs Spires that it would be a good excuse to do a weekend in Milan but it's about the only city in the entire country she's not fussed on :-(

Ha I meant their Manchester show. Guess that has been and passed now.

I think we’ve been to about 30 different European cities, and Milan is definitely in the bottom 3.

Yeah couldn't arrange care for any of the dates that you could still get tickets for :-( . They're playing Bearded Theory but we're already committed to End of The Road later in the year and I'm not sure my aging bones or wallet are up for two festivals.
