Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

Listened to the Placebo. Found it a bit overwrought and clunky in a couple of places but overall liked it and will listen again so a hit.

One review I read said it’s a departure from their usual style, be interesting to know what long time fans of the group think and what of their earlier stuff they’d recommend

I'm probably not enough of a fan to recommend that, but I'll comment anyway, since you are giving it a go.

I wouldn't say it is a departure myself, just more polished and produced. But then, the age they are and how long they've been going, a 'raw' sound wouldn't really work imo.

They have always been a bit of a 'so close yet so far' band to me. Some really good stuff, and I've quite happily listened to a bulk of their releases. But when it comes to real greatness, always felt like they were on the verge of something special but never quite nailed it. For me.

They probably follow a similar ark to most bands from the 90s that are still going. Young unchained rough-diamond debut, then a hit follow-up with a bit more input from someone who knows what they are doing. Then at some point years of repeat releases, to finally a 'return to what it is all about' and the glory days of unchained youth. I also find with a lot of those, people that didnt like the earlier work at the time, may have missed the boat, just can't get into it the way those with a bit of nostalgia can.

The first two albums are worth a listen. The debut I thought was really good at the time, and it was something new and bold. But now after subsequent albums feels almost amateurish. Eventhough the writing on it is really good. Part of me wishes they would re-perform/reissue it, slightly more mature sounding, it would actually be a really good album. Incidentally, arguably my favourite album of all of last year was a re-issue of a 1998 album (Clarity), with a touch more polish and a grown-up voice I found what was always a good album great. The other part of me thinks Placebo's debut shouldn't be refined, it has a sound to it, the guitars and drums in parts have similar qualities to Blackened Sky which could easily be my favourite ever album, if I were to allow any one album to claim that title. Which I don't.

Their second album is far more successful, and acclaimed. Partly because David Bowie was claimed to have loved discovering them and promoted them, I believe (could be wrong) had a hand in producing it. Definately did an EP with a single off the album with them. It is much more accessible and easier to like.

The rest I wasnt that interested in for a while, probably till Loud Like Love, which was a bit of an 'absence makes fonder' and I quite enjoyed it. Similar to this new one though, well produced but possibly quite mainstream. Can't really point to anything beyond that. Happy to hear your take on it if you get round to giving them a go.

More of a recommendation than a nomination this one…

New EP from The Smile, Pana-vision.

Each track is decent. Album out later in the year, hopefully that’ll be good and gets on the nominations list.

Finally listend to a nomination and it’s John Mellancamp Strictly a one eyed jack.
Firstly I had to come up with a way for me to mark albums so my marking is
Will I definitely buy a physical copy - bullseye,
Will I maybe buy it or at least put it in my itunes library to play again- hit
Will i not play it again- miss
So John Mellancamp, I liked the music but as somebody that has a few of his albums his voice isn’t just a little harsher it’s a lot harsher and I found it hard going. I really wanted to like this, but in keeping with my system , I wouldn’t buy it, and as much as I tried to crowbar a hit out of it I know deep down when in the mood for a bit of John Mellancamp I will play one of his earlier ones not this.
So with a slight regret its a MISS

Ryan Adams.....Chris.
Miss like his other 4 or 5 albums.Sadly looking like we are not going tomget another classic from him.
I agree abiut his last 5 or 6 albums some good tracks but very inconsistent, not heard this one yet.Ironically this his best most recent album was 1989 the Taylor Swift covers album.

Midnight Oil Resist.
I have most of their albums up to Earth and Sun and Moon and was a fan, saw them leve a couple of times. Then I sort of lost touch with what they were doing, In fact mid nineties I lost touch with most music, children business etc.
Anyway I enjoyed this a lot and off one play I will buy it and it seems as good and relevant as their early albums.
Question, are their albums between Earth and Sun and this on as good ?
So as I put this down as a buy a physical copy, that for me is a BULLSEYE.

Bloody hell, I'm supposed to be Midnight Oil's big champion on these threads and ever since I've mentioned them, the number of people who have come on here and said they have seen them live is growing daily! I never did get to see them.

Glad you enjoyed the new album. It's far better than it has any right to be and their passion and commitment shine through on every song.

The thing about MO is that they had a hiatus between 2002 and 2016 whilst Peter Garret was a politician and member of Australia's Labour Government, so you may have missed a lot less than you think! I think Earth and Sun and Moon is by far their best album, but from the missing period.....

Breathe (1996) Not bad, but nothing special, which is a shame because Malcolm Burn is a producer I love.
Redneck Wonderland (1998) - A bit too punky in places for me, only a handful of very good tracks.
Capricornia (2002) - This is the one you want to give a listen - it has some exceptional songs and performances and in my opinion, is one of their best.

EDIT - I don't know how many Midnight Oil albums you have, but you could do worse than buy this exceptional 2-CD set that I've recommended on here a few times. It's actually available on Spotify as well if you want to listen first.
I bought it recently for £7 but now it's a shocking £9 !!!

Thanks, I will try that next, can't remember exactly when I saw them, I'd guess late 80s, I see they are playing London in July. but that's their only UK date.
