Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

Never really got Arcade Fire when they were all the rage. Will give the new album a listen and maybe be pleasantly surprised
I loved Funeral. Brilliant album! Not listened to the new one yet.

Gaz Coombes has brought out a new track:

Really like his solo stuff, hopefully there’ll be an album later in the year.

Can't believe there hasn't been a decent album release since June...

There was a new one from Blue Orchids, Angus Tempus Memoir, not likely to win them any new fans but a hit for me, containing the usual mixture of eccentricity and brilliance.

Out this week is a solo release from Bret Mckenzie, one half of Flight of the Conchords. Songs Without Jokes is a pretty self explanatory title. It's been compared to Randy Newman, I wouldn't know about that and it's a departure from what I usually listen to but in my mellow middle age I enjoyed it. Another hit.

Coming Up is a new Suede album. Actually Coming Up is on old Suede album but you know what I mean. They have a new album coming up. I expect it will be a hit but we'll have to wait and see.

Wet Leg - Wet Leg Eponymous album, by a new, upcoming group which I quite like.

Their song, Chaise Longue, brought the band to my first attention - but the entire album is wonderful.

The band reminds me somewhat of The Pixies - great melodies/riffs, coupled with irreverent, sexually suggestive lyrics.

Plus, I think I'm in love with the beautiful Rhian Teasdale :-)

There have been a few things I had meant to put forward, but the interest in this thread seems to have disappeared, was waiting to see if anyone would revive it. Here goes if anyone picks up.

'Dawes - Misadventures of Doomscroller'.
Summery light poppy forgettable but easy listening temporary fun album.

'Russian Circles - Gnosis'
Not light or summery. Very good though.

'Pianos Become The Teeth - Drift'
Only recently out as a full album but a fair few the singles have been out a while, moody melancholic melodic.

'Hostile Architecture - Ashenspire'
Not for everyone. Something a bit different.

beach house, once twice melody
Both of these have already been on the list for months - see the list on page #1.

Hopefully we can get this thread busier during the autumn and winter - I’m as guilty as any in that I’ve been enjoying listening to “old” stuff a bit too much for the last few months.

I too have neglected this thread, not sure how many of the other nominations I’m really going to get around to I’ll try and pick a few.
Any way I have a few more nominations of my own I’ll add
Nominate Lalu
French keyboard player Lalu, while their first 2 albums were more prog metal this album leans much more towards prog and reminds me in places of Yes. Damian Wilsons vocals tinges of Jon Anderson too
Bullseye

Nomination 2
Cats in Space new album Kickstart the Sun.
For anyone that loves 70s classic pomp /glam rock, with vocal harmonies a sprinkling of Queen, ELO, Styx but still a strong Cats in Space identity. This album is one you shouldn't be missing out on, but then their previous 4 were great too. This though theur best and IMO the album of the year so far. Hugely original perhaps not, but then who else doing this now.. and certainly not this well.
Another Bullseye for me
