Album of the Year Thread - 2022 - Winner - For the Sake of Bethel Woods - Midlake

Never really got Arcade Fire when they were all the rage. Will give the new album a listen and maybe be pleasantly surprised

After more than a couple of months of listening voting, I thought that I'd do the first stage of tidying up.

There are now 3 tables on page #1:-

1. Current albums (everything nominated since the start of April)
2. Qualifiers (every album to receive 4 or more votes Jan-March)
3. Q1 albums (every album nominated Jan-March)

So we have 7 "qualifiers" for the next stage of voting later in the year:-

VotesAlbumArtist
5For the Sake of Bethel WoodsMidlake
4Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in YouBig Thief
4OldAlix Page
4Strictly a One-Eyed JackJohn Mellencamp
4Sinners ShrineDean Owens
4The Sea DriftThe Delines
4Chimes at MidnightMaraguda

That's not to say that people can't register votes for anything in the Q1 table - it's just that it's unlikely and it saves me copying a huge table every time it's updated.

There were a good number of albums that at least 4 people liked, but I think we're struggling to get a consensus on more recent releases. With this in mind, it may be that it only takes 2 or 3 votes to match the Q2 batch of qualifiers.

I think the thread is going well, and I'm enjoying assessing what is out there. It has certainly made me listen to some stuff that I normally wouldn't have found, so thanks to everybody for their contributions.

Top work, Rob.

Alix Page is in Manchester today for her sold-out gig supporting Grace Abrams at Club Academy.

I'm honestly sure she'll be thrilled to get a nomination from Blue Moon for her "Old News" EP.

I had to go to Leeds on Monday for her gig, brilliant.

You do great work on these threads. A big thank you from me.

Just a small point though, the last one on that list should be Madrugada.

No worries - thanks for taking part.

I've corrected Madrugada. That was a hideous mistake - not just one letter but transpositions all over the place!

Nomination
Willie Nelson - A Beautiful Time
Possibly not the sort of thing that typically gets nominated in this thread so maybe a bit dodgy for a first nomination. But....to put it in context this is his 72nd album and he's 89 years old, i can't get my head round him being able to still do this and it come out with a credible piece of work. I think the whole recording approach was designed to minimise the effort he needed to put in, but even so.

It's not all great, the world doesn't need another cover of 'with a little help from my friends' (albeit he gets away with it) but then a cover of 'tower of song' works really well. There's new songs on there too and you can just hear in his voice and lyrics his sharing with us his thoughts and reflections on life. It's not a rage against the dying of light late Johnny Cash thing but also it's not just simply wistful. It's just very Willie Nelson...e.g. "I don't go to funerals, I won't be at mine" .

The closing verse of the last song is

I just want to leave you with a smile
Even though that hasn't always been my style
I've messed up, best intentions but I've loved you all the while
And I just want to leave you with a smile
I hope that I leave you with a smile

Personal view, if this turns out to be his last release (I hope not) he will have done that.

HIT

Mentioned them earlier in the thread and was looking forward to the album, and it doesn’t disappoint! Cracking album this. AOTY so far for me (I said that about Widowspeak but this tops that), easily a Bull’s Eye!

Will give this a listen. Radiohead fell off my radar a bit but heard one of the Smile tracks and definitely worth listening to some more
